Yitzhak Rabin (b. 1922, Jerusalem-d. Nov. 4, 1995, Tel Aviv), Israeli prime minister, began his military career in 1940 when he joined the "Palmach", the elite unit of the Haganah. During the War of Independence (1948-1949), he commanded the Harel Brigade, deployed on the Jerusalem front. For the next 20 years, he served with the IDF as O.C. Northern Command (1956-1959); as Chief of Operations and Deputy Chief of Staff (1959-1964) and as Chief of Staff (1964-1968), commanding the IDF during the Six-Day War. On January 1, 1968, he retired from military service and shortly afterwards was appointed ambassador to the United States. During his years as ambassador in Washington, he promoted and consolidated the ties between the two countries. In the spring of 1973, Rabin returned to Israel and became active in the Labour Party. He was elected Member of the Knesset in December 1973 and when Golda Meir formed her government in April 1974, was appointed Minister of Labour. On June 2, 1974, the Knesset expressed confidence in a new government headed by Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. During Rabin's premiership, the government placed special emphasis on strengthening the economy, solving social problems and reinforcing the IDF. With American mediation, disengagement agreements were signed with Egypt and Syria (1974), followed by an interim agreement with Egypt in 1975. Later in 1975, the first Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the governments of Israel and the United States. In June 1976, Rabin's government issued the order for "Operation Entebbe", liberating the hijacked Air France passengers. Following the May 1977 elections, and until the formation of the National Unity Government in September 1984, Rabin served as a Knesset Member of the Labour Party in opposition and was a member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. In the National Unity Governments (1984-1990), Rabin served as Minister of Defense. In January 1985, he presented the proposal for the withdrawal of IDF forces from Lebanon and the establishment of a security zone to guarantee peace to the settlements along Israel's northern border. He was elected chairman of the Israel Labour Party in its first nationwide primaries conducted in February 1992 and led the party to victory in the June 1992 Knesset elections. In July 1992, Rabin formed Israel's 25th government and became its 11th Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, and acting Minister of Religious Affairs and Labour and Social Affairs.

Blumenthal family. Collection 1910-2004, 1945-2001 / Blumenthal family.
Title:
Blumenthal Family Papers
The Blumenthal Family papers (Collection 394) contain a large assortment of documentation of one of the most prominent Jewish families in North Carolina. The history of this family in Charlotte, North Carolina goes back to the 1920s, when Isadore D. Blumenthal (familiarly known as "Dick" Blumenthal) established the Radiator Specialty Company along with George G. Ray, his partner. As this company prospered, Blumenthal bought out his partner and then ran the company with his younger brother, Herman. With the wealth that they accumulated, they dispensed millions of dollars to a wide variety of charitable causes, and there is a great deal of documentation in this collection concerning their various charities. As devout Jews, the Blumenthals were active with their synagogue, Temple Israel, and were also interested in the history and the development of the state of Israel since 1948. There is a wealth of information in this collection concerning the Charlotte Jewish community, Judaism, the Holocaust, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, anti-Semitism, and Israel. One of their biggest and dearest projects was the establishment and development of the North Carolina Blumenthal Home for the Jewish Aged and also Fair Oaks retirement center. Both of these institutions were conceived, planned by the Blumenthals and financed mostly from their generosity; and there are many files in this collection about these institutions.

Title:
Rowland Evans Jr. and Robert D. Novak papers, 1948-2008.
Papers, 1948-2008, of Rowland Evans Jr. (1921-2001) and Robert D. Novak (1931-2009), one of the nation's longest journalistic partnerships. Evans and Novak were best known for their newspaper column "Inside Report" and the "Evans & Novak" cable television program. Novak alone was known for work on the "Crossfire" and "Capital Gang" television programs. Documentation of their joint and individual writing and reporting includes a complete run of "Inside Report" with an index; transcripts, video, and audio documentation of "Evans & Novak;" articles, newsletters, drafts, and research material for freelance writings and books such as "The Agony of the GOP," "Lyndon B. Johnson: the Exercise of Power," "Nixon in the White House," and Novak's lengthy autobiography, "The Prince of Darkness." Supplementing the writings and reporting are extensive subject files containing additional interviews and primary and secondary research material on many topics. Research on the presidencies of Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and William Clinton is particularly strong. Also included are reader and viewer mail, general correspondence, political polls, scheduling files, and some separate files of Rowland Evans.

Guide to the Sam Reiss Photographs, circa 1930-1975
Title:
Guide to the Sam Reiss Photographs, circa 1930-1975
Samuel Reiss was among the most prominent and prolific photographers of the labor movement in New York City from the late 1940s until his death in 1975. During the three decades that Reiss earned a living with his camera, he documented a changing work force in a changing city, building a reputation as "Labor's photographer." Week by week, throughout his career, Reiss made photographs that document New York's labor movement during its most active, influential, and progressive years. The Sam Reiss Photographs Collection - Part II: Photographic Prints is comprised of approximately 8,400 overwhelmingly black and white 8"x 10" photographic prints from ca. the 1930s to 1975, although the bulk were shot between the 1950s and 1970s. Most of these images document the activities and leadership of many of the major labor unions in New York City and the metropolitan area during this period, including those representing workers in the garment, retail, communications, transportation and entertainment industries, and teachers. Many of these images are portraits and group photographs. A small but rich selection of images shows people engaged in various kinds of work, and the collection also includes small numbers of images of sports and recreation, school children, building construction, apartment housing, voter registration drives, and picnics.

Ambassador Auditorium Collection, 1974-1995
Title:
Ambassador Auditorium Collection 1974-1995
The Ambassador Auditorium Collection contains the files of the various organizational departments of the Ambassador Auditorium as well as audio and video recordings. The materials cover the entire time period of April 1974 through May 1995 when the Ambassador Auditorium was fully operational as an internationally recognized concert venue. The materials in this collection cover all aspects of concert production and presentation, including documentation of the concert artists and repertoire as well as many business documents, advertising, promotion and marketing files, correspondence, inter-office memos and negotiations with booking agents. The materials are widely varied and include concert program booklets, audio and video recordings, concert season planning materials, artist publicity materials, individual event files, posters, photographs, scrapbooks and original artwork used for publicity. Many of the print materials include handwritten comments from office personnel and administrators, and many of the artist photographs are autographed. Since the various office personnel maintained their own files, and the same information was often needed in more than one office at a time, the collection contains duplicate copies of many items. Although efforts were made to eliminate duplicate material from the same file or the same series, duplicate copies of items exist among the files from different offices. In an effort to maintain the original content of these files, the cross-file duplicate items were retained in the collection.
ArchivalResource: 636; containers of various sizes with multiple types of print materials, photographic materials, audio and video materials, realia, posters and original art work (682.05 linear feet).

Histadruth Ivrith of America, records, undated, 1900-2005
Title:
Histadruth Ivrith of America, records undated, 1900-2005
The records document the Histadruth Ivrit's early history to the present, representing a significant portion of its work in spreading the Hebrew language in the United States in the second half of the twentieth-century. The records include substantial amount of material regarding the organization's history, administration, public events, publications, and reports. Some information of the early history of the Histadruth Ivrit could be found in the records kept by the writer Daniel Persky. Persky collected personal and professional records that include correspondence with friends, readers, and writers; a partial collection of the drafts of his own publications, and a collection of photographs and newspaper clippings. The functions and activities of the Histadruth Ivrit are documented through Board of Trustees and Board meetings agendas and minutes; various programs for events, conventions, conferences, and celebrations; documents related to fundraising; public relations, press releases and brochures; correspondence with different individuals, organizations, and foundations; Histadruth Ivrit's publications among them the newspaper Hadoar and Tov Lichtov; a large collection of photographs, and scrapbooks. The records of the Histadruth Ivrit represent the large majority of the organization's activities dating from the 1980s to the present. Records for the earlier years of activities are fragmented and incomplete. The records related to the life of Daniel Persky are also partial and copies of many of his publications are missing. This collection included brochures, correspondence, financial records, flyers, grant applications, invitations, lists, minutes, news clipping, orders, periodicals, photographs, press releases, reports, and scrapbooks.

Amichai, Yehuda. Yehuda Amichai papers, 1929-1999.
Title:
Yehuda Amichai papers, 1929-1999.
The Yehuda Amichai Papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, journals, photographs, printed and audio-visual materials, and personal papers documenting the life and work of Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai. The collection spans the years 1929 to 1999, with the bulk of the collection dating from the 1960s to late 1990s. Series I, Correspondence, consists chiefly of single letters and small groups of incoming personal and professional correspondence. The series features correspondence with writers, editors, translators, publishers, and literary scholars and critics, as well as prominent Israeli and Jewish cultural and political figures. Amichai travelled regularly for readings, conferences, and other events in the 1980s and 1990s, and there is also considerable event-related correspondence with various academic, cultural, and political institutions. Correspondents in the series include the cultural and political figures Teddy Kollek, Ehud Olmert, Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Rabin, Moshe Safdie, and Zalman Shazar, and the authors David Albahari, John Ashbery, Lynne Reid Banks, Breyten Breytenbach, Paul Celan, Rita Dove, Martin Gregor-Dellin, Patricia Hampl, John Hollander, Ted Hughes, Erica Jong, Patrick Joseph Kavanagh, Naomi Shihab Nye, Cynthia Ozick, Linda Pastan, Anne Sexton, Alan Sillitoe, Marin Sorescu, and others. Israeli authors include Yigal Allon, David Avidan, Amos Oz, Meir Shalev, and Anton Shammas. Letters are chiefly in Hebrew and English, with some German. Series II, Writing of Yehuda Amichai, is organized into nine subseries: Articles and Essays; Children's Books; Forewords and Introductions; Interviews; Novels; Plays; Poetry; Speeches, Lectures, and Addresses; and Other Writings. The majority of the manuscripts are holograph and typescript drafts in Hebrew, with a significant minority in English. The poetry subseries features drafts for collections and individual poems. Amichai's major collections from Me-ahore kol zeh mistater osher gadol (Behind All This Lies a Great Happiness) are well represented with multiple drafts of poems. The translation section consists chiefly of translations of Amichai's work by others, though translations by Amichai, from Hebrew into English, can also be found. The translations include examples of Amichai's work in over fifteen different languages. Series III, Writings of Others, contains drafts and printed versions of work by others. The bulk of the writings in this series are about Amichai and Hebrew and Israeli literature and poetry. Presumably most of these works, which include reviews and articles, as well as some poems and theses, were sent to Amichai as a courtesy. Most of the work is in English, Hebrew, and German. Series IV, Journals, is arranged chronologically by date. The journals, written in Hebrew and German, date from 1954 to 1998, and include notes, diary entries, drafts and draft fragments for poems, and ideas for poems. Series V, Photographs, is organized into four subseries: Yehuda Amichai, Events and Trips, Other People, and Other. There are portraits and snapshots of Yehuda Amichai alone and with others dating from 1929 to 1996. The series includes many photographs from literary events and reading tours, and of other writers: John Berryman, Breyten Breytenbach, J. M. Coetzee, Ted Hughes, Octavio Paz, Vasko Popa, Meir Shalev, Kazuko Shiraishi, Elizabeth Swados, and Andrei Voznesenski, among others. Series VI, Printed Materials, is organized into twelve subseries: Announcements; Awards; Bibliographies; Brochures, Pamphlets, and Promotional Material; Business Cards; Catalogs; Clippings; Conference and Event Material; Periodicals; and Other. The printed materials in the collection document Amichai's public life from the 1950s to late 1990s. Conference and event material, for example, consists of printed ephemera relating to literary events attended by Amichai from the late 1960s to late 1990s. The clippings and periodicals in the series contain work by and about Amichai. Here work by Amichai consists chiefly of printed versions of poems in Hebrew and in translation. Works about or mentioning Amichai range from brief references to literary analysis. Series VII, Audio-Visual Materials, is organized into two subseries, Audio Recordings and Moving Image Material. There are original and commercial audio recordings of Amichai and others reading his work, and original and commercial video recordings of various events, including award ceremonies, interviews, and readings. Series VIII, Personal Papers, includes addresses and phone numbers, artwork and drawings, biographical material, calendars, financial, legal, and medical records, lists of poems, and schedules and itineraries.
