The collection consists chiefly of Chappell's illustrations and artwork for books, dust jackets, magazines, Book-of-the-Month Club and Borzoi Books, announcements, keepsakes, bookplates, and Christmas cards; and individual sketches and drawings by Chappell and other artists. The collection also contains personal and professional correspondence; printed material; some photographs; articles; talks and speeches by Chappell; exhibition catalogs featuring Chappell; reviews and notices for books illustrated or written by Chappell; examples of various typefaces; political cartoons; and various topical files. There are also manuscripts and drawings by Chappell's grandfather, John Taylor Chappell, and by Samuel Michael Chappell. Topical files contain articles by Chappell, Alfred Fairbank, Fritz Kredel, and Paul Standard, catalogs from exhibitions featuring Chappell's work, lectures by Chappell, reviews, and type showings. Other artists whose work appears include Isabel Bishop, Paul Cadmus, George Cattermole, Gustav Eichenauer, Willi Harwerth, Rudolf Koch, Fritz Kredel, Allen Lewis, Charles Locke, Imre Reiner, Boardman Robinson, Rudolph Ruzicka, Ernest H. Shepard, Francesco Solimena, and Hugo Steiner. Artwork collected by Chappell includes pieces by Hieronymus Bang, Annibale Carracci, Sebastiano Conca, Salomon Koninck, Charles Parrocel, Giovanni Piazetta, and Francesco Solimena.

The notebook contains a membership list, minutes and by-laws, 1885-1886, of the Richmond District, Knights of Labor Building Association; minutes, 1895, of an attempt to reorganize; and minutes, 1897-98, of Local Union no. 1, Cooperative Commonwealth of Virginia, and its independent local successor the Socialist Educational Club of Virginia. Cooperation with the Socialist Labor Party, and the possibility of a socialist community are topics in the Brotherhood of the Cooperative Commonwealth of Virginia minutes which also contain the draft of a protest over the granting of franchises by the city of Richmond to private companies for public utilities. The collection also contains essays and a short story by John Taylor Chappell, and an article by Samuel Michael Chappell tracing the history from 1914 of government and business repression of U.S. democracy and individual rights, particularly those of socialists and union members. The 1922 strike of the Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks against the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad for which Chappell was fired and blacklisted is described.
