Title: Scrapbooks, 1850-1910.

Consists of two scrapbooks kept by members of the Newman family. The first is a gift album compiled by J.E. Newman in 1869 using lithograph and photographic Christmas cards depicting assorted religious and secular scenes. One of the more interesting illustrations if of an elf holding several toys. Flowers and angels predominate. The second volume features newspaper clippings interspersed with written comments reflecting the activities of several family members. The beginning of the scrapbooks contains primarily medicinal recipes. A number of articles relating to growing and markets fruits, vegetables, and plants follow. Many of the clippings pertain to Buffalo, N.Y.: its history, climate, vital statistics, and local news. Illustrations of the Erie Canal, including pencil sketches of ships that sailed on the canal are featured. Poems, many with the note "written at Johns Hopkins Hospital" are in the volume. Finally, the later part of the volume offers material on world happenings in the first decade of the 20th century.
