Expressed her hope that "you may have great cause for rejoicing this week at your protracted meeting." Of Broadus's children: "Your dear littles ones are well. Annie and little sister have both had colds ... I hope the little change in the arrangement with your friend will not make you sad as it is not an unusual case in matters of much importance. I think all things will work right, I think she gave you decided reason to believe you had won her affection." Broadus married Charlotte E. Sinclair, his second wife, Jan. 4, 1859.

Wrote: "I have heard the news, so I sit down to write you an epistle of con.̲̲̲̲̲ Wherewith shall I fill up the blank? d̲̲̲olement, or g̲̲̲ratulation. Twins--I declare--well I never!" Maria Louisa, third daughter of John Albert and Maria Carter Broadus was born in 1856.

April 22: She wrote "I had felt badly all day in consequence of not having had quite sleep enough, and today too I have at times been far from feeling light and active. April 25. I have felt unwell a large part of the time and then I can't exert myself much. Today, when I returned to Papa's to dinner after giving Nanny her music lesson I was so much exhausted, I felt I could hardly get there. April 26. I felt very badly all day yesterday, and didn't read more than two hours all put together." Maria Louisa, the Broadus's third child was born ca. June, 1856.

William excused himself from going to Charlottesville to preach for John: "I am in a meeting here Thursday night and the school is on hand, and I am suffering tortures with hemorrhoids and many other things prevent. Accept the will for the deed." In closing, he sends "love to the little children and Julia Somers." John's wife had died in Oct. and Julia Somers probably was part of the arrangements to care for Broadus's three small daughters, Eliza, 7; Annie, 3; and Maria, 19 months.

Wrote concerning the health of Broadus's daughters: "They talk about papa every day, say they wish you may not have to go from home again to stay so long--they send their love and say they will try and be good children." Broadus's wife died Oct. 31, 1857 and he was away from home while involved in the formation of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Dec. 4. "I was greatly comforted by receiving another letter from you today, as I always find it so hard to get along without you. You cannot expect me to write every day, for I really cannot get the time. Here I am, just returned home with the same old pain in my head, and back. Of course, I can write but a few lines as these present pains are almost entirely the result of want of sleep, and taking no exercise. I want to go to town very much to see about a stove. The dining-room is worse even than the one we had up stairs. [folder 1/22]." Dec. 6. Maria bought a stove: "I hope you will not think I am trying to be independent but I acted upon the very best judgment I could make. The stove he says is first-rate and sold at almost no profit, to Mr. Broadus, for $12. I shall think of you tomorrow, and pray that you may preach and the people may hear with more than mere curious interest [folder 1/22]."
