Title:
Mental Health Association in New York State (MHANYS) Archives, 1872-2001.
Record Group 1 includes documents related to the activities of the State Charities Aid Association (SCAA) of New York State in the field of mental health. In 1884, the SCAA created a "special committee on the insane," with the initial goal of replacing the practice of caring for people with mental illness in poorhouses with a complete system of state care for those with both chronic and acute mental illness. Through this committee the SCAA soon became a leading advocate of reform in New York State's mental health system. Record Group 1 also includes legal documents, annual reports and other reports, minutes, memos, letters, and pamphlets generated by various committees of the SCAA, reprints of articles by people belonging to or associated with the SCAA, and some state government documents and other external documents related to the work of the SCAA. Record Group 2 includes documents related to the activities of the New York State Society for Mental Health. It was established in 1951 with the missions of public education, advocacy, recruitment and training of mental health professionals and volunteers, special studies and research, and the creation of groups in every community of New York State to work for mental health and to obtain additional needed facilities. This series includes board of directors, committee, and citizen advisory group minutes, annual conference and campaign documents, and copyrights. Record Group 3 includes documents, video and audio tapes, and photographs related to the activities of the Mental Health Association in New York State, Inc. (MHANYS), an organization seeking to promote mental health, to improve care and treatment for persons with psychiatric disabilities, and to help prevent mental illness. Record Group 3 also includes: legal documents, bylaws, minutes, manuals, directories, organizational procedures, financial information, facilities information, correspondence, telephone message logs and forms, daybooks, conference proceedings and conference planning material, contracts, contract requests for proposal (RFPs), contract proposals, contract reports, databases, position papers and other advocacy-related documents; and press releases, public statements and other public information items; reports, reprints, photographs, video and audio tapes. In addition, Record Group 3 contains a limited amount of external information related to the activities of MHANYS, including legislation and other documents from the state and federal governments; and externally generated reports, reprints, and meeting minutes. Multimedia material is also included. Audiotapes include oral histories of some of the key figures in MHANYS. Video tapes include news stories on mental health issues that used MHANYS's input as well as video recordings of MHANYS conferences, award presentations and talks.
