Title: Papers, 1787-1828.

Papers consist of business letters, orders, invoices, bills, and receipts, and a very few personal letters. One personal item of particular importance is a copy of a 1799 letter to Nathaniel's brother Isaac, in which he tells about his anchor business and gives a little news about the family. The business papers focus on Cushing's anchor business and his investments in overseas commerce, trading in such commodities as iron, cotton, cotton yarn, flour, and tobacco. Correspondents include: Ebenezer Little Boyd, Joshua Barstow, Charles Scudder, Benjamin Cushing, J.B. Borland, and the firm Lodges & Tooth. As well, the collection contains some photocopies of items about Cushing found in other collections. Transcripts of the items are part of the collection and are filed with the originals. It is not known who did the transcripts, nor when. A few transcripts are for items not in the collection; the location of the originals of these is not known. The transcripts have not been checked for accuracy.

Correspondence, mainly for 1848-1887, consists of the personal and family letters of Mary Jacobs Cushing, Olive Cushing, John Cushing, and Nathaniel Grafton Cushing, containing family news, a few letters concerning John's Civil War service, information about his attempts to start farms in Iowa and Nebraska, and a series of letters, 1872-1873, from Taylor Z. Thistle, a freedman studying at Nashville Normal and Collegiate Theological Institute, Nashville, Tenn. Legal papers include bills of sale, land plats, leases, and a copy of the division of John Cushing's estate. Miscellaneous items include home remedies and a printed copy of the constitution of a temperance society. Among the volumes are an account book for staple groceries and a personal account book for 1852. There are numerous bills and receipts; a statement of wages for a schoolmaster, 1806-1807; and records of shipbuilding expenses, 1810-1819.
