This collection chiefly consists of photocopies and transcriptions of papers relating to Jonathan Lucas (1754-1821) of South Carolina and his descendants. Papers include correspondence, business, financial, property, and legal records, slave records, and other items. Principal persons represented include Jonathan Lucas, Jr. (1775-1832), his son William Lucas (1789-1878), and William's sons Robert Hume Lucas (1825-1915) and Alexander Hume Lucas (1838-1914). Correspondents include Charles Baring (1774-1865), Thomas Grange Simons Lucas (1847-1916), William Washington, Plowden Weston, John Hume, Anna Camilla Cordes (1802-1874), and Lizzie Doar (Mrs. Alexander H. Lucas). Properties that figure in the papers include the Wedge Plantation and Harrietta Plantation. Most of the letters of Robert H. Lucas originate from California, where he moved in 1867, and concern his financial struggles, his wife's health, family matters, and some property in South Carolina. Some correspondence of the 1880s pertains to Lucas family history and genealogy. Correspondence of Alexander H. Lucas includes letters he wrote during Confederate service, some from Sullivan's Island (S.C.). He served as an officer on the staff of Gen. James H. Trapier.

Records consist of correspondence including a copy of a letter from James H. Witherspoon, colonel of the 8th Regiment, Corps of Reserves, to I.W. Hayne concerning the handling of deserters, "General Orders No. 5" to Witherspoon from Brigadier General Trapier concerning rules and articles of war to be read before every regiment, squadron, battery and independent company, and "General Orders No. 52" from Albert C. Garlington, S.C. Adj. General concerning the election of field officers.
