The goal of University Housing is to provide programs, services, and facilities that promote educational and personal development of campus residents. It focuses on embracing diversity, encouraging leadership and civic engagement, and fostering a strong bond between North Carolina State University and its students. The University Housing staff meets twice a semester to evaluate policies, and recommendations and concerns of administration, students and community members. University Housing (formerly the Department of Housing and Residence Life) was created in the 1950s and placed at that time under the administration of the Division of Student Affairs (where it remains as of 2010). Since its inception, University Housing has undergone many transformations, including its latest during the 1990s, when committees met to re-evaluate the goals and purposes of University Housing.

Collection documents Ronald Mace's work as an architect, designer, consultant, and educator, as well as an advocate for the rights of the disabled. The collection reflects work produced from 1974 to 1998, with the bulk of the material from 1980 to 1990. The records include correspondence, project reports, architectural drawings, videos, and publications. Much of the material reflects Mace's work as a consultant with BFE, Inc. Ronald L. Mace was a nationally and internationally recognized architect, product designer, and educator whose design philosophy provided a design foundation for a more usable world. He coined the term "universal design" to describe the concept of designing products and the built environment to serve the needs of people regardless of their age, ability, or status in life.
