University scenes include the Rotunda and an interior view of the Library in the Rotunda, the Lawn, the Ranges, the Serpentine Walls, Dr. Alderman's residence (Carr's Hill), the Chapel, Cabell Hall, Madison Hall, Randall Hall, the Observatory, the Museum (Brooks Hall), the Y.M.C.A. (Madison Hall), Fayerweather Gymnasium, the Hospital. Many of the postcards were sent by A.L.M. of Charlottesville to the Misses Kate and Buena V. Flynn of Washington, D.C. and contain brief notes. One was sent by Mary John, a summer institute student living on the West Lawn. Two scenes are by the Holsinger Studios. One is a modern view published by Newcomb Hall Bookstore.

Postcards from the University of Virginia sent by Stanley "Bud" Reeves tohis sister, Willie, in Johnson City, Tenn. Scenes are chiefly of the Rotunda, Lawn, and Ranges. There are also views of the Serpentine walls, Hospital, Madison Hall, Cabell Hall, Fayerweather Gymnasium, Pavilion X, the Chapel, and the scene [at President E.A. Alderman's inaugural] There are also views of Monticello, Montpelier, Christ Church in Charlottesville, Main Street, Charlottesville, the junction of University Avenue and Main Street, Charlottesville showing the excavation for the street to run under the C & O railroad bridge, and Roanoke Valley near Elliston. Some of the views were taken by Holsinger, Charlottesville, Va. The majority of the postcards have very brief notes. On October 22, 1908, he mentions a big Confederate parade, and on November 14, 1909, he notes the death of Archer Christian : "Virginia crushingly defeated Georgetown yesterday but paid dearly for the victory - the price was a man's life. The whole University in gloom as the result of the sad affair. A memorial service in chapel to-night."

The collection also contains notes on Rice Garland who went with his family to Cincinnati in 1820 and returned to claim an inheritance, notes on "Uncle Jeemes" who loaned gold to someone in West Virginia and "lawyers got it all after the Civil War,"and two plans of the Johnston Family burial ground.

Va., ca. 1900; a [general store?] of Powers Stevens; three children in a miniature automobile; a man in a rocking chair reading a newspaper announcing Italy's entry into world War II; and several brides. Also Philip Nelson, 1865, a Confederate [lieutenant?] from an unidentified regiment; Margaret Simes in her home; the four horses of Julian Morrris; the George Otis Dickinson family, late 1890s; and Eudora Bolling, aged 3, 1936. The collection also includes a scene of Niagara Falls in winter, two nature photographs, 1998 and n.d.; and a print of an English scene titled "A mail in deep snow," possibly based on similar paintings by Samuel Henry Gordon Alken. Local photographs include Gitchells, Holsingers, Tyson and Perry and Wampler's. Also Walter W. Foster of Richmond, Va.

The collection contains photographs of unidentifed African-Americans who may be members of the Goins family of Charlottesville, Va. Several of the photographs were taken by the Holsinger Studio. In addition to the photographs there are scattered obituaries, correspondence and miscellaney. Most pertain to the Goins family of Charlottesville, Va. Of interest are records from the family Bible of Robert J. Goins and Sarah L. Snead, giving a record of their marriage at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Charlottesville, Va., 1887, and the births, marriages and deaths of children and other family members. The collection also contains a printed article by H.F. Gamble "Industrial education of the Negro youth."
