Much of the material pertains to research of insulin and to priority in its discovery. The interview was conducted for the Oral History Research Office of Columbia University. The Warren A. Sawyer Papers, 1967-1990, consist of 2 cubic feet of material documenting Mr. Sawyer's career and his research interests in the history of medicine. The collection is divided into two series: Professional and Topical. The Professional files contain materials associated with Mr. Sawyer's career, including professional correspondence, official obituaries, professional condolences and tributes, and materials demonstrating his well-known humor. The topical series is the most voluminous and consists of correspondence, research notes, drafts, final copies, and research materials pertaining to medical history topics. Topics include: Daniel Brickell and Samuel Cartwright; J. V. C. Smith; Abraham Colles; William Osler; the history of the Medical University; States Rights Medicine (the idea that only Southern physicians could appreciate and treat "southern" diseases); and E. L. Scott and the discovery of insulin.
