Shelby Stephenson (1938- ) is a poet; professor of literature and creative writing at Campbell College (now University), Buies Creek, N.C., 1974-1978, and at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (formerly Pembroke State University) after 1978; and editor of beginning in 1979. Pembroke Magazine The collection includes personal and professional correspondence of Shelby Stephenson; files relating to " , North Carolina arts organizations, and Stephenson's academic career; and many writings by Stephenson, both poetry and prose. Included is correspondence with local, national, and international poets, novelists, editors, and publishers, including A. R. Ammons, Fred Chappell, Norman Macleod, Guy Owen, and Paul Green. There is also some correspondence with friends and relatives. materials include correspondence with contributors and issue files. Also included are files relating to North Carolina arts organizations with which Stephenson was involved, including the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association, the North Carolina Writers Network, the North Carolina Poetry Society, and the Friends of Weymouth. There is also some material relating to Stephenson's academic career, especially at the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (formerly Pembroke State University). Included are teaching materials and other items. Stephenson's writings include many drafts of poems, manuscripts of several books of poetry, and essays and book reviews. Richard Gaither Walser (1908-1988) was a professor of English at North Carolina State University in Raleigh and author of numerous works, chiefly relating to North Carolina's literary heritage. The collection contains correspondence, clippings, photographs, and other materials chiefly relating to North Carolina' literary heritage. Files on individual authors and literary subjects dominate, with special emphasis on the life and works of Thomas Wolfe. Other authors represented in the collection include Doris Betts, Helen Bevington, James Boyd, Richard Chase, Jonathan Daniels, Wilma Dykeman, Charles Edward Eaton, John Ehle, Paul Green, Bernice Kelly Harris, George Moses Horton, Gerald W. Johnson, Frederick H. Koch, Guy Owen, Robert C. Ruark, Wilbur D. Steele, Hardin E. Taliaferro, and Jonathan Williams. There is also material on North Carolina folklore and other topics not directly connected to literature. A small number of items relate to Walser's life as a student at the University of North Carolina and to his service with the United States Naval Reserve during World War II.

Correspondence, legal documents, clippings, and other materials relating to Dannye Romine Powell's tenure as book editor and columnist at the "Charlotte Observer," as well as her work as an author and poet. Much of the correspondence is from North Carolina writers. Correspondents include novelists Doris Betts, Lee Smith, Gail Godwin, Kaye Gibbons, Reynolds Price, Simmons Jones, Josephine Humphreys, Fred Chappell, Lawrence Naumoff, Sue Ellen Bridgers, Louise Shivers, Jonellen Heckler, Mignon Ballard, and Shelby Hearon; poets Ruth Moose, Charles Edward Eaton, Sam Ragan, Mary Kratt, and Harriet Doar; and "Charlotte Observer" editors. Other letters are from readers commenting on Powell's "Charlotte Observer" articles or are from "Charlotte Observer" book reviewers. Also included are letters and other papers relating to Powell's 5 July 1987 "Charlotte Observer" article about adult children of alcoholics and to her 26 June 1999 "Parade" magazine article about Kay Smith, AKA Pamela Rodgers, who escaped from a Columbia, S.C., prison in 1978 and started a new life in Maryland before being recaptured in 1988.

George P. Garrett (1929-2008) was a poet, editor, author, and professor of English. The papers of George P. Garrett span the years 1929 to 2000 with the bulk of the material being dated between 1960 and 1990. The papers were initially collected and assembled by author, bibliographer, and publisher Stuart T. Wright. Wright published a number of Garrett's works at his Palaemon Press and also assembled the Stuart Wright Bibliographic Collection of George Garrett (see related materials held by the Rubenstein Library). Additional materials were received by the Library directly from George Garrett. The papers document Garrett's literary career as an author of novels, short stories, poetry, and dramatic works (including filmscripts) and the tremendous influence he had as an English professor and an editor on an entire generation of writers, particularly in the South. Correspondence with numerous authors, publishers, and educators offers much information about the history of 20th-century Southern literature, publishing, and literary education. The collection is divided into the Writings Series (with subseries of Writings by Garrett, Writings Edited by Garrett, Writings by Others, and Proofs); the Correspondence Series (with 5 subseries of alphabetically and chronologically arranged correspondence); the Audiovisual Material Series; and the Miscellaneous Papers Series.

Sam Ragan Papers, 1948-1996

Title: Sam Ragan Papers, 1948-1996

Samuel Talmadge Ragan (1915-1996) was managing and executive editor of the (Raleigh, N.C.), 1948-1969; editor and publisher of (Southern Pines, N.C.), 1969-1996; award-winning poet; writing teacher; and supporter of the arts in North Carolina. Ragan served as the first secretary of the North Carolina Department of Art, Culture, and History from 1972 to 1973. In 1982, he was named Poet Laureate of the state of North Carolina by Governor James B. Hunt. He was also chair of the North Carolina Arts Council, chair of the North Carolina Writers' Conference, and president of the Friends of Weymouth, which operates the Weymouth Center for Arts and Humanities in Southern Pines. Ragan died at his home in Southern Pines on 11 May 1996. News and Observer The Pilot Papers document Sam Ragan's career as a journalist and his role as patron of the arts in North Carolina. Correspondence files include materials relating to newspaper organizations, the North Carolina Arts Council, North Carolina Writers' Conference, North Carolina Writers' Network, and the Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities. Subject files include information about the Freedom of Information Act and on the Free Press-Fair Trial confrontation of 1968, along with correspondence from various North Carolina writers. Writings include materials regarding Ragan's (Blair, 1964), typescripts of commentaries from which aired on WTVD television in Durham, and drafts of works by other writers. There are also materials relating to Ragan's tenure at the , typescripts of the columns, and letters to the editor used on the editorial page of . Financial information chiefly relates to the .
