Title: Documents. 1835 Jun. 6-Jun. 29.

Documents relating to the European settlement of Melbourne and Geelong 1835: 1. A copy of the Geelong deed of purchase made by John Batman and dated 6 June, 1835: believed to be the first made. 2. An agreement between Batman, Bannister, Simpson, Gellibrand and others dated 29 June, 1835. This document concerns two tracts of land at Port Phillip and the management thereof. It goves George Mercer authority to negotiate with the British Government with a view to validating the terms of the agreement in document one. Also it presents the rules and regulations to be observed in the conduct of a colonial settlement. Annexed to this is an indenture of the same date between the same parties, establishing the entitlements and proportions of all members in the assets of the Association, and in particular the land covered by the terms of the Melbourne and Geelong purchases from the Aborigines. Taken together, these two documents appear to be the foundation documents of the Port Phillip Association. 3. An indenture of 30 June, 1835, between Batman, Swanston, Simpson and Gellibrand making provision for the illness or death of Batman before the proper conveyance of the land in question. Batman would convey land to his associates on trust for the Port Phillip Association, subject to the payment of an annual tribute to the Aboriginal chiefs.
