D. Grier Martin was the 13th president of Davidson College. Born in Covington, Ga., in 1910, he graduated from Davidson College in 1932 and attended Emory University from 1932-1933. In 1933 he returned to Davidson to become alumni secretary and publicity director. He left Davidson in 1936 to accept a position as department manager of the Campbell Coal Co. in Atlanta, Ga. From 1940-1951 he was a partner and sales manager for Grey Hosiery Mills in Bristol, Va. During that time he also attended Harvard Business School's War Adjustment Class, graduating 2nd in the class in 1944. He was also a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve. In 1951, he returned to Davidson to become treasurer and business manager, and in 1958 he succeeded Dr. cunningham as president of the college. He retired from the presidency in 1968, and died in 1974 from Alzheimer's disease.

Title: Duke Endowment Archives, bulk 1902-2008 and undated, 1925-2006

The Duke Endowment was established by James Buchanan Duke as a perpetual charitable trust in 1924, with the following types of beneficiaries, mainly residing in North Carolina and South Carolina: non-profit hospitals and child care institutions; educational institutions; and rural churches of the Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (now the United Methodist Church). The Duke Endowment Archives span the years 1902 to 2006, with the bulk of the material dating from 1925 through 2006. The collection documents the administration of the corpus of the trust and the charitable contributions made to the categories of recipients named in the Indenture and Deed of Trust establishing The Endowment. The majority of the records are arranged into series that reflect the organization of the institution, including the Board of Trustees, Treasurer's Office, Controller's Office, Investment Office, Education Division and Committee on Communications, Health Care and Child Care Divisions, and Rural Church Division. Smaller series, documenting such other activities as record-keeping, publications, and history of The Endowment, include: Central Files, Oral History Project, Trust Under Will, Publications, Miscellaneous, Photographic Materials, and Audiovisual Materials. The collection consists of the following types of materials: correspondence; minutes of meetings; financial records; applications for assistance from hospitals, child care institutions, and churches; statistics; publications; oral history tapes and transcripts; architectural drawings and blueprints; photographs; audio cassettes; and miscellaneous records and papers. The geographic focus is primarily North Carolina and South Carolina.

Biographical information concerns Dr. Martin and his family, including tributes to him during his life and after his death. Material includes a letter from Eleanor Roosevelt to Mrs. Martin's mother. Addresses include speeches on Davidson College (1954-1968.) Correspondence includes letters from Dean Rusk and the College's future president, Sam Spencer. There is an interview (1964) with Frank Rounds of the Duke Endowment. Two notebooks contain notes for speeches and other thoughts. Appointment books are from 1962-1968. Printed material includes the College fundraising campaigns; election, inauguration, resignation, and retirement from the College presidency; diplomas and certificates; a place card signed by president Lyndon B. Johnson; and a White House luncheon menu signed by Dean Rusk. Photographs (1930-1972) include formal portraits, family, and Davidson College President's House. Oversize material includes a scrapbook from visit to Japan, honorary diplomas, and inaugural greetings. Organized into the following series: Biographical material; Addresses; Correspondence; Interviews; Notebooks; Appointment books; Printed material; Photographs; and Oversize.
