Title:
Episcopal Theological School collection of Kentucky Episcopal bishops' letters, 1869-1955.
Collection of letters written by various Episcopal bishops of Kentucky. Most are brief letters written to librarians at the Episcopal Theological School, responding to a request for a letter to be added to the school's collection. A few letters are written to George Z. Gray and William Lawrence, deans of the school. Includes pages, presumably removed from a scrapbook, with the name of each bishop and the date of his consecration. Some letters and envelopes are still pasted to the scrapbook pages. Clippings with printed photos of some of the bishops are also included.

Smith, B. B. (Benjamin Bosworth), 1794-1884. Benjamin Bosworth Smith papers, 1825-1882.
Title:
Benjamin Bosworth Smith papers, 1825-1882.
These substantial materials relate to Smith's long career in the ministry, affairs of the Diocese of Kentucky and of the Episcopal Church in general, and official communications as Presiding Bishop. Three early letters, 1825-1828, from the Reverend Robert B. Croes, concern Smith's activities while at St. Stephen's Church, Middlebury, Vt. Papers about Smith's election as Bishop of Kentucky, 1831-1832, are followed by numerous letters by and about Smith, chiefly his intimate letters to William Rollinson Whittingham before and after Whittingham became Bishop of Maryland. Smith offers Whittingham a post in his new seminary in Kentucky, 1835; asks Whittingham to accompany him on episcopal visitations, 1842; and writes about numerous Church periodicals, publications, and doctrinal controversies. Many letters frankly describe conditions and events in the Diocese of Kentucky; Smith's troubles there; accusations against him in 1837 and 1855; the schism of Bishop George D. Cummins, his assistant bishop, in 1873-1874; and many clergy matters, such as his refusal to accept the Reverend James Briscoe in 1872 because of his ritualism. Other subjects include Smith's theological beliefs: views on baptism, the ministry, the Eucharist, confessions, and reform of the Prayer Book; High and Low Church disputes; Smith's desire for church unity on the basis of primitive church principles; his impartiality and belief the Church of the future needs less ritualism and sacramentalism (1857); relations with the Baptist, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox Churches; support for the missions to Greece and Turkey in the 1840s; the Freedmans' Commission, 1868; and many references to relations with the Church of England, including the Lambeth Conferences of 1867 and 1875-1878; attendance of English bishops at the General Convention of 1871, proposals to vest the patriarchate in the Archbishop of Canterbury and correspondence with the Archbishop, 1875-1876, the death of Bishop Wilberforce, and parliamentary proceedings affecting the Church of England, 1874. Many papers relate to business of the House of Bishops and the General Conventions, elections of many bishops with comments concerning them, criteria for giving consent to the election of bishops, organization of the Episcopal Church and proposals for the provincial system, 1869-1873, and much concerning missions. Papers of 1871-1880 relate to the missions in Cuba; others of 1871-1872 discuss the mission in Haiti, the project for sending Bishop John Payne there, and oversight of Haiti by Bishop A. Cleveland Coxe. Papers of the Mexican Commission of the House of Bishops, 1874-1876, include references to Bishop Smith's role in its affairs. In 1872 Smith urges Bishop Whittingham to attend the conference of Old Catholic Churches at Cologne and gives his views concerning those churches. Official correspondence of 1875 deals with charges against Whittingham for not disciplining a clergyman who used prayer for the dead. The same year Smith writes about African missions, stating he would vote for the Reverend Joseph Sandford Attwell, a Black man, to be bishop there or bishop for the freedmen in the U.S., giving an account of his career and qualities. Correspondence of 1878 concerns the General Convention held in Baltimore, Smith's ill health, and his approaching death. Letters from Smith after Whittingham's death praise him highly and reminisce about their long friendship and their visits with Bishop Wilberforce and William Ewart Gladstone in England in 1857.

Collection includes 5 letters (with transcripts) written by Henrietta Clay Gist (age 15) while in boarding school in Louisville, Kentucky to her sister Susan Gist of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. A student at Episcopal Bishop Benjamin Bosworth Smith's academy at his home, "Kalorama," Gist writes her sister concerning school events, her impressions of Louisville, various young men, and other family matters. The letters provide good insights into life at an all-girls boarding school during the mid 19th century and the social life and attitudes of teenage girls of the era.

A small group of Ormond Beatty's papers contain material related to the Civil War, Centre College, the Caldwell Institute, and real estate in Danville, Kentucky. Letters from Ormond Beatty are included in the papers of his parents. Ormond Beatty's daughter, Pattie, grew up in Danville, following the Civil War. Correspondence to and from Pattie Beatty describes traveling and vacationing in numerous parts of the eastern United States. She was also involved with Presbyterian missionary groups and some related material is included in the collection. In 1882, she married John A. Quisenberry. His papers relate to agriculture, politics, social life, business, and real estate in Kentucky and Texas. Thomas E. Quisenberry, the son of John A. and Pattie Quisenberry, moved to Evanston, Illinois. His papers reflect business, politics, social life, and other aspects of life in Illinois in the mid-twentieth century. Included are copies of his letters to politicians, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, offering Quisenberry's opinions on various issues. The correspondence of his wife Quinlan Hanna Quisenberry (nee Agnes Quinlan Hanna) details social life and travel.

Title:
Record book, 1837.
This record book is a printed pamphlet (with Coit's notes) of charges brought against Benjamin Bosworth Smith (1794-1884) in Lexington, Ky., 1837. Smith was recort of Christ Church in Lexington, 1830-1838, and had been appointed first Bishop of Kentucky in 1832. He was also one of the founders of the Theological Seminary, and later became Senior and Presiding Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church, U.S. The church hearing held in 1837 was due to conflict in the parish which resulted in the temporary formation of two churches. Coit inserted among the printed lists of charges his own notes regarding witnesses who appeared to testify for and against Smith, as well as quotations from their testimony. Coit himself was apparently a witness against Smith. The six charges contain detailed specifications and include interference with the operation of the Seminary and Transylvania University, duplicity, and improper handling of church funds. Several witnesses were Hamble James Leacock (1795-1856) and Dr. Henry Caswall (1810-1870).

Johns, John, 1796-1876. John Johns papers, 1819-1876.
Title:
John Johns papers, 1819-1876.
The papers span the ecclesiastical career of this leading Low Church bishop. They are principally correspondence with Bishops James Kemp, William Murray Stone, and William Rollinson Whittingham, of Maryland, other addressees being Bishop Benjamin B. Smith and clergymen William E. Wyatt, John P.K. Henshaw, and Mervin Allen. The collection begins with Johns's testimonials for priest's orders, ordination, and work in All Saints Parish, Frederick County, Md., 1820-1828. He is accused of latitudinarian and Calvinist views and has a controversy with Bishop James Kemp over a proposed theological seminary for Maryland. He is invited to become President of Transylvania University, 1826, and is a prominent candidate for Bishop of Maryland after Kemp's death, 1823-1830. Voluminous correspondence concerns the later election of William Rollinson Whittingham as bishop, 1840. Later papers relate to Johns's rectorship of Christ Church, Baltimore, 1828-1842; his dealings with Bishop Whittingham and role in the Standing Committee of the diocese; and his election as Assistant Bishop of Virginia, 1842. Substantial materials concern the Episcopal Church in Virginia, chiefly clergy matters, some Civil War items, post-war correspondence about reunion of the Episcopal Churches North and South, and reports of episcopal services Johns performed for Whittingham in Maryland, 1867-1870.
