Horner, Matina S. The Radcliffe centennial survey.

As part of its Centennial celebration in 1977, Radcliffe College undertook a comprehensive survey of the life experiences of its alumnae. The questionnaire was designed to collect information about their personal background, college experiences, and subsequent marital, educational and employment histories. The survey was sent to over 13,000 women who had attended the college as undergraduates and graduates from the classes of 1900 to 1975. Of these, 6000 completed and returned the questionnaire, representing a response rate of 47.67%. For individual classes response rates ranged from 29% to 76%. Most respondents had started attending Radcliffe as first year students and continued through their senior year. Other had only received part of their college education at Radcliffe. The sample is 85% caucasian. Ages range from 20s to 100, with the greatest percentage in their 30s or 40s. The survey is divided into two parts which were sent in the same mailing. Topics covered in part one include: paid and volunteer work during adulthood; salary; educational history; accomplishments and distinctive titles and awards earned; career counselling received; current involvement with Radcliffe alumnae and activities; if married, husband's education, work, and salary. Part two includes questions about: undergraduate experiences at and satisfaction with Radcliffe; family background and expectations about education; marital history and children; career history, including interruptions in work and detailed history of positions held. The survey ends with opinions about women and education, volunteer work and paid jobs. The Murray Center has raw data for part two of the survey for 700 participants and computer data for both parts. The raw data from part one of the survey are filed at the Radcliffe Alumnae Association.

This study was a follow-up of the participants in the original study of fear of success conducted by Matina Horner in 1965 with 89 women and 88 men, most of whom were freshmen when tested by Horner. Specifically, Hoffman examined whether fear of success and need for achievement scores changed over time in this sample, and also the degree to which the original 1965 fear of success scores predicted subsequent behavior--such as marriage, motherhood, career, and pursuit of further education. The original men and women who participated in the 1965 Horner study were recontacted by letter and asked to participate in the follow-up study. Questionnaires were then mailed to all 177 participants; a total of 72 men and 86 women returned questionnaires. The research instruments consisted of six projective story cues and a lengthy questionnaire. The questionnaire contained both open-ended and precoded questions about life events since 1965, including demographic information, education and work histories, family background, and family status. Participants also answered questions about their attitudes toward work, marriage, childbearing, sex roles, and the external events which they felt had affected their attitudes. Computer-accessible and raw data are available. These participants were followed up by a Murray Center researcher, Deane Foltz, and follow-up data are available separately (see Foltz, A615).

Interviews include family background, career experience before coming to Radcliffe, but focus largely on Elizabeth Cary Agassiz's vision of Radcliffe at its founding, the transformation of Radcliffe during the Horner years, and Radcliffe's relationship with Harvard. The purpose of this study was to develop an empirically derived scoring system of success avoidant motivation and to validate it by observing its behavioral correlates and situational determinants. The sample consisted of 105 women and 106 men who were students in an introductory psychology class at the University of New Hampshire in the fall of 1972. In an initial session, two large groups, separated by an hour, were administered five verbal cues, as well as the Lowell Scrambled Word Test, the Test of Perception of Traits in Others, and a basic questionnaire. One month after the first session, the second session was held with individuals randomly assigned to groups. The "aroused" group paired a male and female participant with comparable verbal skills judged by their performance on the Scrambled Word Test. The females in this condition were always "winners" in order to arouse success avoidant motives in the female participants. Performance tasks, the Hand Test, a second set of five verbal cues, the Anagram Task, and a General Information Questionnaire were given to all participants. In the "nonarousal" group, participants were not paired in order not to generate feelings of competition. They were given a booklet only labeled "Arithmetic Problems," with no performance feedback, as well as the other tests. A "cooperative" group, whose tests results were not analyzed, were given verbal instructions to induce a cooperative set, and then the same measures. All existing raw data and computer-accessible data are available.

This study was conducted to determine if the motive to avoid success was one factor responsible for the unresolved sex differences in previous research on achievement motivation. The sample consisted of 90 women and 88 men who were students in an introductory psychology course (largely freshmen) at the University of Michigan in the winter of 1965. In two evening group sessions participants were administered six verbal projective cues, the Alpert-Haber(1960) Achievement Anxiety Test, and three timed tests entitled "Ability Indices." The latter included one-half of the Lowell (1952) Scrambled Words Test, a series of solvable and nonsolvable line puzzles, and an arithmetic puzzle. In the second test period, participants were randomly assigned to one of three performance conditions: noncompetitive (NC), mixed sex competitive (MF and FM), or same sex competitive (MM and FF). The instruments administered during the second testing session included a level of aspiration or risk preference task, three performance measures, and a personal questionnaire. All existing raw data and computer-accessible data are available. Data are also available from two follow-ups, conducted in 1974 and 1980 (see Hoffman, A014; and Foltz, A615).

Horner, Matina S. Cognitive and emotional development in early adolescents.

These data were collected at an elite private secondary school in New England in 1975-1977, shortly after this previously all male institution had become coeducational. The purpose of the research was to examine the effect of a predominantly male environment upon the female students in the areas of achievement motivation and performance, sex role identification, moral and conceptual development, and eventual career choice. All of the 48 girls who entered the school during its first year of coeducation and 196 boys were tested in December, 1975. The following winter, 1977, 184 students were retested. During this testing, an additional sample of 55 boys and 38 girls was added to the study. Shortly after the first testing period, the 48 girls and a matched sample of boys were interviewed. After the second testing period, follow-up interviews were conducted. The instruments used at Time I included five Thematic Apperception Tests (TATs) with verbal cues, the Alpert-Haber measure of test anxiety, the Bem sex role inventory, an anagram, a Kohlberg moral judgment dilemma, and a short demographic sheet. The interview included questions on attitudes toward the school, relationships with parents, future expectations, self-concept, friendship patterns, influence of others, personal goals, and attitudes toward the women's movement. The Time II instruments used were Rosenberg's self-esteem questionnaire, Feffer's "People I Know" task, sentence completion measure, Kohlberg's moral dilemma, Uses of Object test and five TATs with visual cues. The second interview focused on experiences during the past year and the degree to which the participants felt closer to their personal goals. The new sample, tested for the first time in 1977, was given measures of sex role orientation, moral development, self-esteem, creativity, and test anxiety, as well as a demographicquestionnaire. The Murray Center has access to all the raw data for this study except the first wave of interviews and some of the follow-up interviews. A small amount of this material has been coded and scored, but most analysis remains to be done.

These data were collected in part to replicate Matina Horner's (1965) original study of fear of success in college students. The major purposes of the study were (1) to investigate what aspects of the anticipation of success produce anxiety in women, and (2) to see whether during the six years between the gathering of Horner's and Hoffman's data, there had been a change in achievement orientations, particularly in the motive to avoid success. The participants, 144 female and 101 male undergraduates, were recruited from introductory psychology courses offered in the fall of 1971 at a large midwestern university. Questionnaires were administered to the participants in two separate evening sessions. The instruments included six projective story cues, a test to measure achievement anxiety, some sentence completions, and a forced-choice questionnaire designed to examine attitudes about sex roles and women's achievements. The questionnaire also included items on background, career, and marriage expectations. The Murray Center has computer-accessible data and all completed raw instruments.
