Apprenticed as a cabinetmaker in Edinburgh and London, Thomas Affleck emigrated to Philadelphia in 1763. His clients included wealthy Philadelphians, some of them fellow Quakers. He also was politically active during the Revolutionary era. For more biographical information, see Philadelphia: Three Centuries of Art (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1976), pp. 98-99.

Mahogany tall-case clock. The hood has a carved broken scroll pediment with a central urn-and-flame finial, dentil molding and carved fretwork on the cornice, a molded arch above the door, fluted columns at the corners, and a glazed door with an astragal top. The waist has dentil molding and carved fretwork at the top, fluted quarter columns at the front corners, and a rectangular case door with indented corners. The base has fluted quarter columns at the corners, square panel with indented corners, and applied molding above ogee bracket feet. The dial has roman hour numerals and arabic minute numerals, moon phase and two hemispheres in the lunette, and eight day movement.

The hood has a molded broken-scroll pediment terminating in carved rosettes with three turned and carved ball-and-flame finials, applied carved ornament in the tympanum, a molded arch above the door, sidelights, free-standing fluted columns at the four corners and a glazed door with an astragal top. Waist with ogee molding at the top, carved blind fretwork above the door, fluted quarter columns at the front corners, and a case door with a shaped top. Base with ogee and ovolo moldings at the top, fluted quarter columns at the front corners, an applied base panel with porringer corners, ogee molding at the bottom and supported on spurred ogee bracket feet. Engraved dial with roman hour numerals and arabic minute numerals, engraved vines and c-scrolls in the spandrels and lunette, and a painted moon face with moving eyes in the lunette. Inside the chapter ring there is a calendar aperture, engraved vines and leaves and the inscription "Burrows Dowdney Philadelphia." Eight day movement.
