Willie Landry Mount was elected the first woman Louisiana State Senator from District 27 on October 23, 1999, after serving 6 1/2 years as the first woman Mayor of Lake Charles, Louisiana. A native of Lake Charles, Louisiana, she is married to Benjamin Mount, Attorney. She graduated from Lake Charles High School and holds a B.S. degree in Business Administration from McNeese State University.
A former small business owner, Mount has been very active in a variety of civic and community betterment projects. She is Past President of the Louisiana Conference of Mayors and served on the Executive Boards of the Louisiana Municipal Association and Council for a Better Louisiana. Mount also serves on the McNeese State University Foundation Board, the Christus St. Patrick Board of Counselors, the United Methodist Foundation, Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana Board, and the United Way Community Foundation.
Senator Mount's leadership has been recognized in a number of ways. She was awarded Distinguished Citizen of the Year by the Boy Scouts, Public Official of the Year by the Msgr. Cramers Knights of Columbus, Public Official of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers, Woman of the Year by the Quota Club, Citizen of the Year by the Kiwanis Club of Lake Charles, and Citizen of the Year by the United States Marine Corps League. Mount also received the Community Service Award from the North Lake Charles Kiwanis Club, the Doretha Combre Award from the NAACP, the McNeese State University Distinguished Alumni Award, and the Patron of Architecture award from the Louisiana Architectural Foundation. Delta Kappa Gamma Society International honored her with their Golden Apple Award. She was also named a Special Friend of the Louisiana Municipal Association in 2002, 2003 and 2004 and was recognized by the New Orleans Regional Chamber and Metro Vision for her efforts during the 2003 legislative session.
