Title: Ruffin, Roulhac, and Hamilton Family, 1784-1951

Ruffin, Roulac, and Hamilton family members resided chiefly in eastern and central North Carolina, but also in Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama. Prominent among them were Thomas Ruffin (1787-1870), Anne M. Kirkland Ruffin (b. 1794), Joseph Blount Gregoire Roulhac (1795-1856), Catherine Ruffin Roulhac (b. 1810), and Daniel Heyward Hamilton, Jr. (b. 1838). The collection includes correspondence, financial and legal papers, account books, photographs, and other items, chiefly 1823-1890, relating to members of the Ruffin, Roulhac, and Hamilton families and their friends and associates. The papers relate to routine family matters and everyday life, and, to a lesser extent, to business matters, including the Ruffin plantations in North Carolina and Joseph Blount Gregoire Roulhac's career as a merchant in Raleigh, to the Civil War and Reconstruction, and to various public concerns. There are few items relating to Thomas Ruffin's legal and judicial career. The collection also contains photographs, carte-de-visite photographs, ambrotypes, daguerreotypes, tintypes, and sketches of members of the Ruffin and Roulhac families, friends, unidentified people, buildings, and Civil War naval engagements. There is also a mid-1850s daguerreotype of the sophomore class at the University of North Carolina, the earliest known image of a group of students at UNC.

William Stevens Powell is an author, historian, and professor of history emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The collection includes correspondence, research materials, speeches, writings, and other papers relating to William Stevens Powell's professional activities and to North Carolina history. Included are materials relating to the History Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; to historical organizations, such as the Historical Society of North Carolina, the North Carolina Literary and Historical Organization, the Roanoke Island Historical Association, and local historical societies; and to Powell's research and writing about the history of North Carolina, especially colonial North Carolina.

The collection includes slave records and other papers relating to Henry Alderson Ellison, planter of Baldwin County, Ala., and his family, including a notebook (16 p.), containing lists of slaves belonging to Ellison in 1848 and 1858-1860 and records of their being hired out. Other papers include a letter, 30 October 1864, from Abram M. Allen, Washington, N.C., an Ellison slave who had been freed before the Civil War, to Eliza Tripp Ellison, Henry's widow, at Wilson, N.C., where she had taken refuge during the Civil War, in which he informed her of his whereabouts and offered hope for the future. Also included is a letter, 16 October 1867, to Eliza, now living near Mobile, Ala., from Edward Stanly (1810-1872), California politician who had been U.S. representative from North Carolina, describing conditions in California and evaluating prospects there for southerners; and five invitations to social functions in Beaufort County, N.C., 1877-1880 and undated, sent to Ellison and Bonner family member.

Material collected by Hench, some as an autograph collection and others for use in his classes at the University of Virginia with examples of various periods. Modern autographs collected by Hench include letters by associates of Edgar Allan Poe; Civil War letters; papers relating to Virginia history; correspondence of writers and politicians, particularly from the Victorian era; and other miscellaneous correspondence with literary or histocial interest. Letters of Edmund Clarence Stedman to Louis Palma di Cesnola, Thomas D. English, Harrison Grey Fiske, Paul Hamilton Hayne, James R. Osgood & Co., Karl Knortz, William Henry Rideing, Charles Warren Stoddard and others include routine thanks and introductions and social notes and freqeuntly discuss literary matters. Strickland and others concerning routine matters and requests. Also shares some memories of Thomas Jefferson. John Reuben Thompson writes to Anna C. Lynch Botta, and Joseph Ripley Chandlerr on routine mattersand a lecture engagement. A sonnet is included. Henry Theodore Tuckerman writes to Anne Charlotte Lynch Botta, Francis James Child, James T. Fields, Josiah Gilbert Holland, Lea & Blanchard, Benson John Lossing, Anna Cora Ogden Mowatt Ritchie, Edmund Clarence Stedman, Edwin Percy Whipple, Nathaniel Parker Willis and others on literary, publishing and social matters, particularly his work on George Washington portaits, the inauguration of Houdon's statue of Washington at which Virginia Governor Floyd revealed his ignorance of art, and the completion of the statues at the base of the equestrian statue of Washington by Randolph Rogers. Stockton sends Amelie Amélie Troubetzkoy apples from the Piedmont region. Also John Bannister Tabb to John Lane on publishing matters; John Taliaferro asks Tristam Burges to convey the principles of a claims commutation case to Muhlenberg; Littleton Waller Tazewell on a routine financial matter and an autograph request; Dr. James H. Thompson, 12th Maine surgeon reporting on medical cases; George Ticknor to Emma S. Robers enquiring after her father's health; Frances Trollope to mary Russell Mitford praising the "Our village" sketches and commenting on the London stage, the Kembles and Macready; Pierre Troubetzkoy writes concerning a painting of William Gladstone; and Lyon G. Tyler thanks Charles Elmer Rice for an offer of Tyler family information. The collection also contains four sermons on Old Testament texts, 1752-1778, at least one ty the Rev. Timothy Alden, Sr., of the Congregationalist church in Barnstable, Mass.; autographs of Dallas Lore Sharp, Jean Sibelius; a requisiton from J[erome?] J. Shedd, 1863, for lumber, nails and quicklime for the Union hospital at Acquia Creek; and a land grant signed by George W. Smith, 1811.
