Field and museum studio photographs of sea elephants, dolphin skeletons, starfish, and sea urchins seen or collected on the expedition. These views are from among numerous ornithological, mammalogical, and invertebrate zoological specimens the crew collected. Photographs were taken by Charles Townsend. Copy photographs by Julius Kirchner. Photographs of skeletons from Kerguelen Island, which may have been included for comparison, are not from this expedition. Photographs are identified.

Title: Charles H. Townsend records, [ca. 1885]-1936.

Collection contains correspondence, notes, and manuscripts of the first Director of the New York Aquarium appointed by the New York Zoological Society, Charles Haskins Townsend (1859-1944). Records represent his tenure of office, 1902-1937, and some records predate his administration and concern activities not connected with the Aquarium. Many documents reflect Townsend's work with the United States Fish Commission and the Bureau of Fisheries, especially investigations aboard the Fish Commission vessel ALBATROSS.

Collection of Capt. A.W. Lavender, Dept. of Interior 1890-1892, St. George Island Sealing Station. The collection includes an 10 x 14 water color of the sealing station at St. George Island, Alaska, by Henry Wood Elliott, 1846-1930, also two 6 1/2 by 9 1/2 pencil drawings by Elliott, were included in the purchase of this collection. They were removed and transferred to that Alaska State Museum. It also includes 32 boudoir-size photographs of Alaskan scenes, plus three larger size Alaskan photographs and numerous letters, documents, relating to the Alaskan adventure of Capt. A.W. Lavender. All items relate to Captain Lavender's command of the sealing station. Items 1, 2, 3 transferred to the Alaska State Museum. Photocopies housed with MS collection. 1. An 10 X 14 water color of the sealing station at St. George Island, Alaska by Henry Wood Elliott, 1846-1930. 2. 6 1/4 X 9 1/2 pencil on paper, of Capt. Lavender, seated by window in rocking chair holding a fishing rod with kind regards of the artist, H. Elliott, July 29, 1890. 3. 6 1/4 X 9 1/2 pencil on paper, The Government House, St. George, Island, for Capt. A.W. Lavender from his friend, the sketch artist H. Elliott, July 25, 1890. The collection also includes the book, Condition of seal life on the rookeries of the Pribilof Islands, 1893-1895, by Charles H. Townsend.

Records of the first Director of the Park, William T. Hornaday (1854-1937), from 1896 until 1926, and W. Reid Blair (1875-1949), who served as Veterinarian from 1902 to 1922, Assistant Director from 1922 to 1926, and Director from 1926 to 1940. These records consist of incoming correspondence and carbon copies or drafts of outgoing correspondence, staff memoranda, reports, and working papers reflecting planning, policies, and day-to-day operations. These recovers cover planning, construction, opening and improving zoological exhibits; the acquisition, shipment, and acclimation of animal collections; veterinary matters; queries from zoologists, zoo visitors, and the general public; public relations; relations with the City of New York concerning transportation facilities and funding; and other aspects of park management.
