This collection is primarily correspondence and also notes on experiments concerning the cytology research of Lewis and his wife, Dr. Margaret Reed Lewis, at Johns Hopkins University, Carnegie Institution of Washington, and finally at the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology in Philadelphia. There is significant material relating to his professional society activity in the American Association of Anatomists (President, 1934-1936) and the International Society for Experimental Cytology.

The collection consists chiefly of Cumming family photographs and copies, 1894-1978, including one of the League of Nations Interchange visit to Washington, D. C., November, 1935, and signed portraits of King Gusta and Queen Louise of Sweden, 1948. There are also photographs and real estate brochures of Cumming property in Georgetown and in Warm Springs, Va. A few items of family correspondence include letters, 1897, on the birth and death of a baby; letters, 1937 on a marriage; and a letter, 1988 from George Bush, congratulating Diana Kendrick for her work in the 1988 primaries. Miscellaneous items include an Alibi Club membership roster, 1986; an obituary for Lucy Booth Cumming; a hand illlustrated story "The girl who didn't believe in Santa Claus" (Winifred West Cummings); newsclippings from the Winifred West-Hugh Cumming wedding, 1935; and maps of Nottoway and Dinwiddie counties. Of interest are an "occupation" coin and a cocktail napkin, 1989, decorated with Wyoming cattle brands.

The collection consists of correspondence, legal and financial documents, literary manuscripts, genealogical material, newsclippings, photographs and keepsake items, certificates and commissions, printed articles and pamphlets, monographs and broadsides. The papers pertain chiefly to Paul Brandon Barringer and other members of his family, most notably General Rufus Barringer and Victor C. Barringer, with some scattered items of Daniel Laurens Barringer, Daniel Moreau Barringer and Anna Barringer. The bulk of the material is personal. Topics include Paul Barringer's unsuccessful attempt to be appointed Secretary of Agriculture, his racial views, his ophthalmology practice, his invention of a fire extinguisher, and charges brought against him the the V.P.I. Alumni Association Welfare Committee; Rufus Barringer's Civil War imprisonment at Ft. Delaware; slave sales, and boarding school life in the the 1870s; Georgia O'Keeffe; the family home "Gravel Hill," Charlotte County, Va. Of interest are copies of letters from Stonewall Jackson, letters concerning Theodore Roosevelt's 1903 visit to the University of Virginia, and theatre broadsides featuring Edwin Booth in leading roles. Papers of Matthew Deady, U.S. District Judge for Oregon and prominent figure in territorial and early state affairs. The collection consists of letters written to Deady from friends and political correspondents, including many of Oregon's leading state and national politicians in the late nineteenth century. Influential forces in the state such as Jesse Applegate and Asahel Bush are voluminously represented, as are U.S. senators Joseph Lane, James W. Nesmith, Henry W. Corbett, George Williams, Lafayette Grover and Cyrus Dolph. Complementing these is a small collection of letters written by Deady to several of the same persons. Also included are Deady's personal journals and family materials.

The Philip S. Hench Walter Reed Yellow Fever Collection documents the work of the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission, the legacy of the commission’s discoveries, the lives of individuals who were connected to the commission, and twentieth century campaigns to shape public memory of the commission. Items in the collection date from 1800 to 1998, with the bulk of the items dating from 1864 to 1974. A wide range of formats are represented in the collection including, but not limited to the following: articles, artifacts, audiocassettes, bills (legislative records), biographies, charts (graphic documents), correspondence, diaries, editorials, interviews, journals (periodicals), magazines, maps, medical records, military records, negatives (photographic), notes, photographs, reports, reprints, scrapbooks, and speeches. Unique materials in the collection are supplemented with copies of original documents and photographs housed in other institutions (e.g the U.S. National Archives). Most of the materials in the collection were collected or created by Nobel laureate Philip Showalter Hench while researching the history of the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission.
