John Davis (1787-1854) of Massachusetts was serving in the U.S. Senate at the time this letter was written. He served from March 4, 1835 to January 5, 1841, and March 24, 1845 to March 3, 1853.
American statesman and Governor of Massachusetts.
American statesman and Governor of Massechusetts.
U.S. senator from Massachusetts and governor of Massachusetts.
John Davis (1787-1854), son of Isaac and Anna Brigham Davis, was born in Northborough, Mass. He graduated from Yale College in 1812 and studied law with Francis Blake of Worcester. He was admitted to the bar in 1815 and soon after settled in Worcester, where he made a reputation as a forceful advocate in the courtroom. In 1822, he married Eliza Bancroft (1791-1872), daughter of the Rev. Aaron Bancorft and sister of George Bancroft. Three of their sons, John Chandler Bancroft, Horace, and Andrew McFarland had distinguished careers.
Davis was a U.S. Congressman, 1825-1834, Governor of Massachusetts, 1834-1835 and 1841-1843, and a U.S. Senator, 1835-1841 and 1845-1853. In Congress, first as a Federalist and later as a National Republican and Whig, he held conservative views on most controversial questions. He was a spokesman for New England interests, which demanded a protective tariff. He was a consistent opponent of President Andrew Jackson, and was against any further spread of slavery in the states or territories. He was one of two senators to vote against declaring war on Mexico. His uncompromising position on slavery prevented his nomination as Henry Clay's running mate on the Whig ticket in 1844. He was opposed to the Compromise of 1850, and exerted all his influence in support of the Whig candidate, General Winfield Scott, in the presidential campaign of 1852. After more than twenty-five years of public service, "Honest John" Davis retired, leaving the Senate on March 3, 1853. Davis was president of the American Antiquarian Society, 1853-1854, and received many honors. He died in Worcester at the age of sixty-seven.

Topical pamphlet collection, <1741>-<1996>.
Title:
Topical pamphlet collection, <1741>-<1996>.
A long-established, artificial, still-growing collection consisting largely of printed pamphlets, with articles, reprints, some ephemera, typescripts, photocopied manuscript material, and one set of slides (to accompany a typescript item) also included. Some of the items within were bound during the 19th century, some are loose. Covering a broad range of topics relating to American (and particularly New England) history, life, and thought, the Topical Pamphlet Collection provides background and context for the more specifically Concord-related materials in the Concord Free Public Library Special Collections. The collection--not to be confused with the Concord Pamphlet Collection--includes <883> items, dating from <1741> to <1996>. Series I (Historical Topics) includes <352> items dating between <1741> and <1996>, Series II (Individuals, As Author or Subject) <300> items between <1761> and <1963>, Series III (Massachusetts Towns--History, Anniversaries, Description, etc.) <127> items between <1748> and <1991>, and Series IV (Pamphlet Materials on Multiple Topics, Organized by Form) <104> items between <1752> and <1940>. Some of the bound volumes include the occasional out-of-scope pamphlet. Moreover, there is some topical overlap of material in different subseries.

Briggs, George N. (George Nixon), 1796-1861. Correspondence, 1832-1861.
Title:
Correspondence, 1832-1861.
This correspondence was written almost entirely during Briggs' career as a U.S. Congressman and Massachusetts Governor. Several letters from Horace Mann (1796-1859) and, to a lesser extent, from Mark Hopkins (1802-1887) and Edward Everett (1794-1865) illustrate Briggs' interest in matters concerning education. Briggs received many letters about politics and legal cases from John Davis (1787-1854). For the most part, the remaining correspondence concerns itself with recommendations, invitations, and various messages of an official nature. A number of these letters were sent by John Gorham Palfrey (1796-1881) and Josiah Quincy (1802-1882).

Davis, John, 1787-1854. Papers, 1812-1902.
Title:
Papers, 1812-1902.
This collection contains correspondence and documents of John Davis during his political career from 1824 to 1853. There is material on the Anti-Masonic movement, Andrew Jackson's war on the U.S. Bank, the struggle between South Carolina and the federal government in 1832, and the rise of the slavery question to a dominant position in American politics. In all of these episodes, Davis played a prominent part with Daniel Webster and other notable Whigs. Letters from these individuals are evidence of the value placed on his judgment and ability as a political leader. Two boxes contain Davis' professional correspondence and speeches arranged chronologically, 1824 to 1851. These papers provide rather intimate details of the policies and methods of men in public life from the mid-1820s to the early 1850s, particularly the activities of the Whig Party. There are originals and drafts of speeches delivered by Davis in Congress on such leading issues as the tariff and slavery, together with many shorter papers on various political subjects. One of his early writings is a journal (in Box #3) kept on a visit to Washington, D.C., in 1830, at which time he sought action by Congress on behalf of the military claims of Massachusetts for the War of 1812. This journal includes drafts and copies of correspondence with federal authorities and many illuminating comments on affairs in Washington and the nation. There are also briefs of several cases argued by Davis in later years before the U.S. Supreme Court. The correspondence with Daniel Webster, Edward Everett, Rufus Choate, and Robert C. Winthrop is significant for the light it sheds on the politics of Massachusetts and the nation, and on the methods used by party leaders to further their aims and interests. The collection also includes one box of family correspondence, 1812-1902, which is mainly between John Davis and his wife, Eliza Bancroft Davis. The letters written by John Davis discuss personal, familial, and social matters as well as political activities and events. While most of these letters originate from Washington, some of the letters were written while taking domestic and European trips. The letters written by Eliza Davis are of the same nature as those of her husband's. Her letters are marked by intelligent political comments on and discussion of state and national issues, particularly as concerned legislation. Eliza appears to have been a confidant and aide to her husband. (It is noteworthy that there are several drafts and copies of his major speeches in her hand.) Eliza Davis' letters also kept John informed of local matters in and around Worcester, although she also spent much time in Washington with her husband and, as a result, her correspondence with her family and friends reveals much about life in the Capitol City during the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Included in Box #1 are letters relating to Eliza Davis' life as a widow. There are also several items belonging to J.C. Bancroft Davis and Andrew McFarland Davis. The final component of the collection is an oversize volume containing eleven miscellaneous warrants, commissions, and other official documents pertaining to the public life of John Davis from 1819 to 1850.
