The Dave Friedman collection is made up of two subgroups: the Photographs subgroup and the Research Files, Programs and Other Materials subgroup. The Photographs subgroup, 1948-1999, is comprised of four series: the Digital Images series, the Negatives and Contact Sheets series, the Prints series, and the Slides series. The Photographs subgroup encompasses an array of races, racecars, drivers and teams and includes images of races at tracks across the United States and around the world. The subgroup includes photographic prints, negatives, digital files, contact sheets and slides. Race name, track, race date and driver information are identified on the back of most prints. Images with no identifying data are filed in each series or subseries as "Unidentified." The Research Files, Programs and Other Materials subgroup, 1946-2009, consists of four series: the Research Files series, 1946-1993; the Audio Cassettes series; the Press Kits and Ephemera series, 1959-2007; and the Programs and Printed Material series, 1949-2009. The material in these series documents in detail races such as the Indianapolis 500, 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as NASCAR, Can-Am, Trans-Am and Formula 1 races across the United States and around the world.

The local economic impact of industry and business on a community, unionization, and the workforces of each industry are also discussed.

The striking, untitled, undated images are dye-color transfer photographs of contemporary racing automobiles, race car drivers, racing crews, racing fans, and arenas. All document the 1967 racing season, a high profile motorsports year for the Ford Motor Company. Included are images of the Ford GT40 Mark IV (currently owned by The Henry Ford), the Ford Fairlane 500, the Shelby Mustang GT 500, and the Ghia Mustang concept car. The collection was presented as a gift from Sports Illustrated to Henry Ford II in 1968.

Individual items of interest include a blueprint of the Almirall System of Forced Hot Water Heating; a block plan of the University of Virginia showing the proposed layout of mains and buildings to be heated by central hot water heating; a report on Administrative reorganization of government; a report on the construction of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway; a report on the School of Nursing; and reports by H. D. Albright, Charles A. Beard, Rowland Egger, Wilson Gee. Also photographs of Newcomb and others including Edwin A. Alderman, together with photographs of the University, several buildings and aerial views.
