To Sir Joseph Banks, naturalist and patron of science : 1 autograph letter signed : 24 Dec 1810 : (MISC 0985) : from Rodmartin : begins, "If the inclosed miscellanies of odd names from my collection should contribute towards the making a merry Christmas for yourself and the Ladies I shall think my time in transcribing them well bestowed." With three and a half pages of humorous names culled from various parish registers. The list begins: "Joan Grone, the midwife, buried 1575. Kingston on Thames. / A daughter of Hamlet & Gertrude Johnson baptized. Romford. / John Wild & Agnes Gallant married -- Ibid. / Hercules Commander. Lambeth ...".

In (1), written from Manchester to Samuel Lysons in London (later forwarded to Cirencester), Piozzi mentions "it was a great gratification to me to be shewed Shakespeare's tomb." (2), written from Brynbella to Daniel Lysons in Putney, states "Dear Siddons was always a slow correspondent" and makes a passing reference to the Ireland Shakespeare forgeries.

Lysons family collection, 1789-1964

Title: Lysons family collection 1789-1964

The collection consists of material gathered by Lindsay Fleming in the course of his research on the life and work of Samuel Lysons, and includes correspondence with scholars and Lyson family descendants; transcripts of portions of Lysons's diary and his letters to Hester Thrale Piozzi; the typsecript of Fleming's "Memoirs and Select Letters of Samuel Lysons"; photographs; and letters to and from Daniel and Samuel Lysons. The correspondence of Daniel Lysons mainly concerns his topographical studies; the correspondence of Samuel Lysons documents his antiquarian interests and his work as Keeper of the Records. Correspondents include William Coxe, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Thomas Penrose, and Wilfred Merton.

This collection consists of 62 letters from Hester Lynch Piozzi: 16 letters to Daniel Lysons, and 47 letters to Samuel Lysons. The early letters to Samuel Lysons from 1784 to 1787 are particularly noteworthy, as they were written while Piozzi was traveling in Italy and relying on his assistance with her Anecdotes of the Late Samuel Johnson, LL.D. (1786) and Letters to and from the Late Samuel Johnson, LL.D., (1788). Other letters are largely social in nature, and written mostly from Piozzi's homes in Streatham Park near London; Bath, England; and Brynbella near Denbigh, Wales.
