The records for the McNeil Center for Early American Studies document the efforts the consortium to fulfill its mission. The collection is divided in two sections according to the date of their processing. The first section, processed in 1992, is 12 cubic feet in volume,; the second section, done in 2010, has 6.3 c.f. Each section consists of four series: The Administrative series consists of two parts, General files and Financial files. The General files include correspondence, annual reports, announcements, brochures, personnel information, and mailing lists. The Financial files include development records, budgetary files, and miscellaneous expenditure files. The development records contain a wealth of information on the Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment of Humanities, the two major funding agencies for the Center, as well as other corporate sponsors and fund raising efforts. The Fellowship files constitute the bulk of the collection. This series contains files on all applicants for doctoral, post-doctoral, and travel fellowships. Applicant files normally contain statements of purpose, letters of recommendations, and writing samples, often in the form of research papers, speeches, articles, and book chapters. As a result, there is a wealth of scholarly research in this series. The Seminar series also holds a variety of scholarly work. The Projects series includes information on the various national conferences and projects supported by the Center. These conferences and projects include the Papers of William Penn; the Biographical Dictionary of Early Pennsylvania Legislators Project; the Transformation of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley, 1750-1850 Project; "The World of William Penn" Conference, 1981; "The World Turned Upside Down: Working People in England and America, 1660-1790" Conference, 1981; "The Founding of Pennsylvania, 1682-1800" Conference, 1982; "The Creation of the American Constitution" Conference, 1984; and the Graduate Student Conference, 1999-2001.

William N. Fenton papers, 1933-2001

Title: William N. Fenton papers, 1933-2001

A Yale-educated ethnographer, William Fenton devoted most of his career to study of the Iroquois Indians of New York State and Canada. Receiving his doctorate in 1937, Fenton worked with the Bureau of American Ethnology for a number of years before becoming Director of the New York State Museum and professor at SUNY Albany. The Fenton Papers covers all aspects of William Fenton's professional life, documenting his varied positions as community worker for the New York Agency of the U.S. Indian Service, 1935-1937 (accounts, reports, correspondence); associate anthropologist and senior ethnologist in the Bureau of American Ethnology, 1939-1951 (includes notebooks, letters from the field); Executive Secretary of Anthropology and Psychology, National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council, 1952-1954; and Assistant Commissioner, New York State Museum and Science Service, 1954-1968.
