Todd, David P. (David Peck), 1855-1939. David Peck Todd papers, 1862-1939 (inclusive).
Title:
David Peck Todd papers, 1862-1939 (inclusive).
Correspondence, writings, records of astronomical expeditions, diaries, notebooks and scrapbooks of David Peck Todd, astronomer and teacher at Amherst College from 1881 to 1917. Between 1882 and 1914 Todd conducted nine expeditions to various parts of the world to study solar eclipses. The notes, photographs, drawings and memorabilia of these expeditions make up a significant portion of the papers. He was also a fertile inventor, and plans and drawings for many devices, some related to solving technical problems encountered on his expeditions are included in the papers. As an early enthusiast of aviation, he made a balloon ascent in 1910 and advocated aerial photography for recording eclipses. In Amherst he raised funds to build a new observatory in 1905 and records of this project and of his teaching career at Amherst are very well documented. His writings include three textbooks on astronomy and a wide range of scientific and popular articles, copies of which are in the papers. His wife, Mabel Loomis Toddd, who was the first to transcribe and publish Emily Dickinson's poems, was an active social force in Amherst and their family correspondence offers a vivid picture of the life of the town as well as a remarkably frank picture of their personal relationship. She also lectured extensively, basing her talks on observations made during the eclipse expeditions. Her letters to her husband during her lecture tours provide an insight both into her character and into female social life of the period. The 368 letters that she wrote between 1878 and 1922 are in themselves a significant section of the papers. Todd's correspondents include astronomers and scientists from all over the world as well as public figures in the United States. In 1922 he was declared incompetent and spent his remaining years in institutions.

The papers consist of correspondence, notebooks, diaries, lectures, financial records, scrapbooks, subject files, and memorabilia documenting the personal life and professional career of Mabel Loomis Todd. Correspondence and diaries detail Todd's personal attitudes and feelings toward her family, her relationship with William Austin Dickinson, her travels with her husband, David Peck Todd, and other matters. Legal and financial papers document court battles over her status as editor of Emily Dickinson's work. Lectures and subject files detail much of Mrs. Todd's work as a speaker and author, including material on Emily Dickinson and David Peck Todd's eclipse expeditions.

His student career is documented with papers written while at Yale College (1845-1850) and at the University of Louisiana Law School. As a distant relative of the Dickinson family of Amherst, Massachusetts, he corresponded with Emily Dickinson, her brother, Austin, and her sister, Lavinia. One letter from Austin Dickinson is in the papers. Emily Dickinson and Lavinia are represented by "snatches" from their letters copied out by Lyman. Also in the papers is a two-year series of engagement letters written to Laura E. Baker between 1856 and 1858 when they were married. Other letters describe army life during the Civil War, the Battle of Shiloh, 1862, and Lyman's interest in journalism and agriculture. Laura Baker Lyman is represented in the papers by a journal and miscellaneous papers.

Dickinson, Emily, 1830-1886. Papers and forgeries of Emily Dickinson, 1860-1984 (bulk 1860-1886).
Title:
Papers and forgeries of Emily Dickinson, 1860-1984 (bulk 1860-1886).
The papers contain a manuscript poem "Just lost, when I was saved!" first published as "Called back" in The Independent, 1891. The papers also contain five letters from Dickinson thanking Franklin Benjamin Sanborn for a book; requesting the Rev. Forrest Fayette Emerson to send her a scriptural passage, inquiring about the death of Helen Hunt Jackson and thanking him for a package, a requested passage and an invitation; congratulating her cousin Eugenia on her marriage; and sending brief notes of thanks and remembrance to unidentified correspondents. Letters of Lavinia Dickinson to F.F. Emerson and his wife Harriet discuss the death of Gilbert Dickinson, Austin's illness, Emily's frail health and their friendship. A letter to Caroline Healey Dall corrects Mrs. Dall's article on Emily Dickinson in "The Boston Transcript," denying a tragedy in her life and explaining her reclusiveness. There are two brief, polite notes to friends, possibly the Emersons. With these are two album leaves of short biographies of Emerson, Emily and Lavinia by a relative of Mrs. Emerson; 30 negative photostats of Emily Dickinson forgeries with an explanation by Joan Crane of their detection by Harold Graves, Josiah Bennett and John S. Van E. Kohn; and a letter from Thomas H. Johnson to Clifton Waller Barrett re the dating of the Sanborn letter. The collection also contains a galley proof, 1951, of Emily Dickinson by Richard Volney Chase.

Bianchi, Martha Dickinson, 1866-1943. Martha Dickinson Bianchi papers, 1847-1944 (inclusive), 1923-1937 (bulk).
Title:
Martha Dickinson Bianchi papers, 1847-1944 (inclusive), 1923-1937 (bulk).
The bulk of this collection is material created by or collected by Martha Dickinson Bianchi in service of the various Emily Dickinson books that she wrote and edited. Compositions and correspondence are the predominant material types. Much of Bianchi's editing work was done in collaboration with Alfred Leete Hampson, her co-editor and heir, and several pieces of material written and revised by Hampson are included in the collection. The majority of the Emily Dickinson (referred in this finding aid by her initials, ED) material consists of transcriptions and facsimiles.
