Main topics included are agriculture, the life style of an affluent planter, neighbors, his involvement as a trustee of Shelby Academy, the activities and health of his family, friends and slaves, medical treatments, and doctors consulted. Most of the year 1800 and all of 1801 and 1802 is missing. A typescript of the diary, a copy of Hornsby's will, and biographical data is filed with the diary.

Correspondents include John May, George May, John Marshall, George Mason, Robert Morris, George Nicholas, Richard M. Johnson, Joseph Hamilton Daviess, Samuel Griffin, Robert Breckinridge, Basil Holmes, David Meade, James Mercer, David Ross, Robert Lewis, Henry Clay, Robert P. Letcher, and others. Also included are the papers of the William L. Booth family of Meade County, Ky., and Leavenworth, Ind. which contain correspondence and business and legal records. The bulk of the collection is correspondence discussing farming, finances, legal and business matters, diseases, family matters, the Mexican War, Civil War, religion, and politics.

Collection of land and family papers apparently inherited and compiled by Miller. Included are documents, 1788-1843, regarding land transactions between the commissioners appointed to apportion the land granted to George Rogers Clark's Illinois Regiment and the men who qualified for the grants and/or their assignees; Ky. land papers, 1780-1843; and miscellaneous land papers, 1785-1798. Also included is correspondence, 1814-1850, chiefly to members of the Miller family, discussing routine family matters; legal and business papers, 1795-1874; accounts, 1809-1861, of the Prather and Miller families; and slavery documents. The land documents contain the names and signatures of many prominent Kentuckians and early settlers of the Clarksville, Ind. area.
