Abbye (Pudgy) Stockton Collection, 1922-2006
Title:
Abbye (Pudgy) Stockton Collection 1922-2006
Abbye “Pudgy" Stockton played a central role in popularizing physical culture and exercise for women in the central decades of the Twentieth Century. She was born Abbye Eville on August 11, 1917 and lived primarily in Santa Monica, CA during her long life. In the late 1930s she began working out with friends at Muscle Beach and quickly became famous for her rare combination of beauty, strength and muscularity. Her husband, Les Stockton, who served in WW II, was also a member of the Muscle Beach community and later a gym owner. Pudgy Stockton is also remembered as the author of “Barbelles" a monthly column about weight training and women that appeared in Strength and Health magazine from 1944-1954.

Title:
Autograph letters signed from J. Thomas Looney, Gateshead-on-Tyne, to Sir George Greenwood, London [manuscript], 1921-1922.
Letters primarily concern the Oxford theory of Shakespeare authorship and Looney's work on the subject: "Shakespeare" identified. (1) makes additional reference to Dugdale's images of the Stratford monument, presumably a reference to illustrations in William Dugdale's Antiquities of Warwickshire . (2) primarily concerns authorship of The tempest. Also, a clipping from the March 20, 1920 issue of The Scotsman, which includes a letter from Looney concerning Shakespeare identified. Greenwood's address given as 33 Linden Gardens.

Thanks Greenwood for pointing out his error (p. 181 of ed. of The tempest) in regards to the quotation from Bacon. Asks if Greenwood has read an article on Shakespeare and Bacon in, he thinks, the April "Nineteenth century." Address on item: 6 Walliscote Road, Weston-Super-Mare. Dated 2.V.18.

Title:
Autograph letter signed from J. Thomas Looney, Gateshead-on-Tyne, to Sir George Greenwood, London [manuscript], 1922 March 14.
Letter refers to Edwin "Reed's anxiety to make a case for Bacon" and Reed's arguments concerning the folio Richard III and emendations in the 1622 quarto. Looney further thanks Greenwood for drawing his attention to Spedding and Dugdale on Henry VIII and states his own belief that the work is not entirely that of Shakespeare. He quotes lines from Act III, scene 2 of that play ("I know her for/ A spleeny Lutheran, and not wholesome to/Our cause..."). A pencil annotation next to these lines reads "Fletcher." Letter written from 33 Linden Gardens, London.

Title:
Letters signed to Sir George Greenwood from various correspondents [manuscript], 1920-1927.
(1) Typed letter from E.W. Smithson, 42, Tilehouse Street, Hitchin, dated 1 Jan. 1920. Refers to Greenwood's review of Mr. Robertson who seems to know "very little about Moliere or French literature" and goes on to discuss the limitations of the the "genius-argument in favour of Stratford rustic." (2) Typed letter from Quincy Ewing, Rector of Christ Churc, Fairlands Farm, Napoleonville, Louisiana, dated April 7, 1924. Ewing has read Is there a Shakespeare problem? and wonders if it's possible to obtain Greenwood's Shakespeare problem restated, despite it being out of print. Inquires after Greenwood's opinion of J. Thomas Looney's Shakespeare identified. (3) Autograph letter from Albert E. Hills, dated November 19, 1927 on letterhead of The Gables, Four Oaks, Warwickshire Thanks Greenwood for acknowledging his letter and explains his "stale information" about Ottocar on the fact that he has only read "The Shakespeare problem restated" and not "Is there a Shakespeare problem?" Refers also to Bacon's Essays, his Henry VII, and Pandosto as well. Includes a postscript "I much enjoy your proof, under Stratfordian logic, that Milton did not write Paradise Lost."

The first part of this collection is comprised of autograph letters signed to Walters from various Shakespeare enthusiasts, scholars, Baconians, publishers, and printers. These correspondents include William Salt Brassington (1859-1939), Frederic Henry Fisher, George Frisbee, Granville George Greenwood (1850-1928), William Jaggard (1868-1947), Horace Nickson, Cecil Palmer, John Lewis Alexander Paton (1863-1946), Richard Savage, Bernard Rowland Ward (1863-1933), Sir William Henry Bailey (1838-1913), and William S. Smedley. The bulk of the collection consists of manuscript drafts and printed essays by Walters on Shakespeare. The bulk of the collection consists of manuscript drafts and printed essays by Walters on Shakespeare. There are also many printed programs, broadside advertisements, and manuscript drafts pertaining to Walters' lectures on Shakespeare (particularly those given in the Manchester area). Also in the collection are Walters' autograph notes, scrapbooks, and an abundance of newspaper and magazine clippings. Topics include the Shakespeare-Bacon theory (including the Northumberland manuscript and Baconian cipher), Edward De Vere, critical interpretations of Shakespeare's plays and sonnets, forgeries, The Shakespeare Tercentenary, Shakespeare's "dark period," Shakespeare and the stage, and the First Folio. Much of the collection sheds light on a network of English literary and cultural societies spreading from Knutsford to Nottingham (see Y.d.1417 (1472-1501) in particular).

Autograph letter signed from John A. Cockburn, Harrietsham, to George Greenwood [manuscript], 1926 January 27.

John Lane Company. Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
Title:
Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
The records of the John Lane Company comprise correspondence, readers' reports, manuscripts and proof copies, financial records, documents, and autobiographical materials. Series I of the John Lane Company Records comprises the correspondence and other records reflecting the activities of this firm, its officers and authors from 1856 to 1933, with the majority dating from 1894 to 1930. The correspondence is largely business-related, although the personal correspondence of John Lane is intermixed. Correspondents include Francis P. Barnard, Horace Bleackley, John Buchan, Walter Crane, Arthur Dasent, Richard and Edward Garnett, Kenneth Grahame, Constance Hill, Stephen Leacock, Vernon Lee, Richard Le Gallienne, William J. Locke, Alice and Wilfrid Meynell, Stephen Phillips, Margaret W. Roberts, Clement K. Shorter, Edward P. Stebbing, A. Francis Steuart, Frank Swettenham, Silvanus P. Thompson, Katrina Trask, William Watson, Theodore Watts-Dunton, and M. P. Willcocks. In addition to the large body of incoming correspondence, there is in the series a quantity of intramural correspondence by members of the firm covering the years 1898 to 1920. A small group of financial records and miscellaneous materials complete the series. The smaller Series II "Creative Work" embraces in the main a large number of readers' reports prepared for the firm between 1894 and 1930. There are no reports for the years 1909 to 1914 nor for 1917 to 1920, but otherwise the coverage appears comprehensive. Also present in this subseries is a small number of manuscripts by Lascelles Abercrombie, William Watson and others. Series III contains a small amount of material relating to John Lane the man. A short autobiographical sketch and notes which appear to be the beginning of a projected history of British art in India are contained in the series, along with fragments relating to Lane. As noted above, a significant amount of his personal correspondence is scattered through Series I.
