Cummings, E. E. (Edward Estlin), 1894-1968. E.E. Cummings Collection, 1902-1962.
Title:
E.E. Cummings Collection, 1902-1962.
Manuscripts of poems, short stories, and collections of verse, notes from his school days, and correspondence make up the bulk of the Cummings Collection, 1902-1968. The Works series contains drafts of several collections of verse as well as individual poems. The evolution of Poems: 1923-1954 is particularly well represented in both typed manuscript and galley format. There are also essays written by Cummings for college exams and two notebooks with notes and poetry fragments. The Letters series is mostly composed of single letters to various people, with the exception of Howard L. Nelson, with whom Cummings maintained a lively correspondence concerning books, poets, and fatherhood over a 22-year period. The Recipient series contains letters from admirers, publishers, and friends including Merle Armitage, Robert Bly, Hart Crane, Judson Crews, Foster Damon, John Dos Passos, Amy Lowell, Stewart Mitchell, Marianne Moore, Marion Morehouse, Charles Norman, James Purdy, Stephen Spender, Samuel Ward, and Louis Zukofsky. The Miscellaneous series is largely composed of notes from Cummings' school days, some elementary, but mostly collegiate. Additionally, a large number of letters sent to Marion Morehouse, most of them written after Cummings' death, are present, along with quite a few letters to Charles Norman. Other miscellany includes manuscripts by other authors, a copy of Cummings' birth certificate, and musical scores.

Papers, 1839-1957.
Collection consists of personal, professional and family papers: letters, manuscripts, diaries, journals, photographs and newspaper clippings. It is a complete record of Mitchell's public and personal life over fifty years. The strength of the collection is in the letters of American writers of the modern movement; friends of Mitchell's such as E.E. Cummings, John Dos Passos, Robert Hillyer and Marianne Moore. Other correspondents include Ezra Pound, Robert Frost, Kenneth Patchen, Conrad Aiken and the owners, editors and contributors to The Dial in the 1920s. Members of the N.E. academic community are strongly represented, inc. Samuel Eliot Morison and Arthur Meier Schlesinger. Mitchell's outgoing correspondence is preserved in carbon, or in the original. Mitchell's personal correspondence, with family and friends, is only partially organized. Literary mss. include short works by Dos Passos and Samuel Eliot Morison, and an unpublished memoir by Mitchell, Gateway to Nowhere. Papers of Mitchell's aunt, Georgine Holmes Thomas, include letters and diaries (ca. 1839-1940) and a multi-volume autobiography in ms.

Cowan, Richard David, 1909-1939. Papers, 1918-1939.
Title:
Papers, 1918-1939.
The papers consist of juvenilia, diaries, sketches and drawings, photographs, and letters received, plus Cowan's letters to his lover and benefactor, Stewart Mitchell (and Mitchell's aunt, Georgine Holmes Thomas), with condolences and other material preserved by Mitchell relating to Cowan's suicide, Oct. 24, 1939. A two-volume diary, 1927-1934 (with gaps), begun as a matriculating student at Cornell and concluded, after graduation, in Boston, details the process of Cowan's personal "coming out" as a gay man and sheds light on gay life during the mid-1930s in Boston. Correspondence with Gerald and Sara Murphy began after Cowan's 1934 summer trip to Europe, when Cowan and his companion, Dudley Poore, were invited to sail from Antibes on the Murphy's yacht. An affectionate friendship developed between Cowan, a landscape architect, and Murphy, in which they collaborated on selecting plantings for Murphy's estate in East Hampton, Long Island.
