This collection of papers contains correspondence, photographs, news clippings, pamphlets, postcards, and books from and about Harriett Engelhardt. The majority of the correspondence is from 1937 to 1945 and includes letters from college, as well as from Canada where Harriett worked before she began working for the Red Cross. The majority of the letters are from England and Europe, and reflect Harriett's experiences working for the Red Cross. They record her observations of landmarks, life following the troops, and her conflicting feelings for the wartime troops versus the occupation troops. Being an avid horsewoman, Harriett also notes any horses she comes across during her travels, the most notable ones being the Lipizzaner horses. Other noteworthy topics includes her visit to Ebensee, a concentration camp in Austria, and her reaction to the death of a co-worker who was run over by a Red Cross truck. The remainder of the correspondence is concerned with Harriett's death. The collection also contains 247 photographic images, most taken by Harriett or other Red Cross volunteers in Europe during the war. These co-workers of Harriett's included Dotty Bargelt, Jacie Sanford, mary Lou Weller, Flo Young and Helen Zimmerman. A couple of notable photographs include one of Gen. George S. Patton and another showing bodies at a concentration camp. The collection also includes photos of Harriett's grave at Lorraine Military Cemetery, near St. Avold, France. News clippings are also in the collection, recording Harriett's service in the Red Cross, as well as her death and its aftermath. The remainder of the collection is composed of pamphlets about Lorraine Military Cemetery and postcards, greeting cards, pamphlets, magazines, and books that belonged to Harriett Engelhardt.
