The collection contains "My childhood at Gravel Hill" by Nannie Barringer, letters to her mother, and genealogical information on the Massey, Morrison, and Brandon families. Photograph, August 1869, of Robert Edward Lee with former Confederate generals James Conner, Martin Witherspoon Gary, J. Bankhead Magruder, Robert D. Lilley, Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, Alexander R. Lawton, Henry A. Wise and Joseph L. Brent and dignitaries Edward Blacque-Bey, George Peabody, W. W. Corocoran and James Lyon at White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. Information on Stonewall Jackson and family including a Memoir on the death of Mary Anna Jackson. The collection also contains a copy of a clipping, 1886, giving Victor Clay Barringer's account of the retreat of Jefferson Davis after Appomattox, some information on the Civil War service of General Rufus Barringer and letters pertaining to Eugenia Morrison Barringer's dower of slaves. Two letters of Daniel Moreau Barringer to John Y. Mason and Levi Woodbury recommend young men to midshipman appointments. The collection also contains notes, drafts and other material relating to Dr. Paul Barndon Barringer's autobiography; some correspondence, particularly relating to his retirement from Virginia Polytechnic Institute; some poetry, short stories and other writings; a photograph; and some speeches and articles including "The American Negro: his past and future," and "An unappreciated source of typhoid infection." There is also a letter from Edgar L. Woods and one to President E. A. Alderman regarding growth and funding of the University of Virginia hospital. Correspondence between Victor Clay Barringer and his niece Anna Barringer, papers relating to his life and career and his obituaries. Articles on Irish houses containing drawings by James Reynolds.

Letters, 1841-1894, of Judge Victor Clay Barringer chiefly to his brothers Rufus Barringer and Daniel Moreau Barringer. The majority concern his service on the International Court of Appeals, Alexandria Egypt, 1874-94. Especially interesting are earlier letters describing a speech by Daniel Webster and a trial of rioters in Concord, N.C. during Reconstruction. The collection also contains a volume of his speeches and some lecture notes. Composition book, 1844-46 from Barringer's courses at the University of North Carolina. Letters, 1870-1901, of Maria Amanda Massey Barringer chiefly to members of the family, describing life in Egypt where her husband was on the International Court of Appeals. Diary, 1861-1864 of Maria Massey Barringer describes life during the Civil War.

The papers pertain chiefly to Paul Brandon Barringer and other members of his family, most notably General Rufus Barringer and Victor C. Barringer, with some scattered items of Daniel Laurens Barringer, Daniel Moreau Barringer and Anna Barringer. The bulk of the material is personal. Topics include Paul Barringer's unsuccessful attempt to be appointed Secretary of Agriculture, his racial views, his ophthalmology practice, his invention of a fire extinguisher, and charges brought against him the the V.P.I. Alumni Association Welfare Committee; Rufus Barringer's Civil War imprisonment at Ft. Delaware; slave sales, and boarding school life in the the 1870s; Georgia O'Keeffe; the family home "Gravel Hill," Charlotte County, Va. Of interest are copies of letters from Stonewall Jackson, letters concerning Theodore Roosevelt's 1903 visit to the University of Virginia, and theatre broadsides featuring Edwin Booth in leading roles.
