Title: Papers relating to Quaker history, 1756-1874.

This collection includes original manuscripts collected by Hi Doty relating to early Quaker involvement in Indian affairs from 1756 to 1821 and the Friendly Association. Of particular interest are documents concerning the settlement at Oneida and the Treaty of Easton. Correspondents include Tedyuscung, Nathaniel Holland, Frederick Post, John Hunt, William Cooper, Israel Chapin, William Savery, James Pemberton, and Joseph Elkinton. Also included in the collection are several letters written by 19th century Quakers on a variety of topics. Among the latter are eight letters received by Joel and Hannah E. Bean.

Includes 26 letters (1743-1773) of Israel Pemberton discussing Friends and Quaker concerns, especially the Quaker "Friendly Association" and its dealings with Native Americans, including letters relating to Pemberton's efforts in 1759 to transport goods for Indians and to work of Christian Frederic Post; also drafts of Israel Pemberton's letters to Sir William Johnson on a 1756 conference with the Indians, and to Benjamin Hersey and the Mennonites in Lancaster in 1758; includes letters from Benjamin Bagnall, William Callender [with Joseph Morris, John Reynell, Jacob Lewis, Owen Jones, Richard Wistar, Jacob Shoemaker and Thomas Say], William Edmonds, George Fisher, Thomas Forster, Elizabeth Robinson, Teedyuscung and others; also memorandums of agreements (1759) with James Kenny and Samuel Lightfoot re: Indian goods. Includes 17 letters (1742-1782) of James Pemberton chiefly discussing the family shipping business and legal and financial matters, also a letter (1769) from Rachel Wilson telling of her travels in the ministry. Includes 46 letters (1753-1789) of John Pemberton with Friends in Great Britain and America discussing business, news of Friends, Friends' travel in the ministry and Adam Solomon (a free black); also John Pemberton's copy of a letter to the Executive Council, 1782, informing them of his intention to travel to Europe for religious reasons; correspondents include Hannah Foster, Hannah Harris, Susanna Hatton, Pearson Parvin, Joseph Row, Adam Solomon, Isaac Whitelock, John Woodcock and others.

Title: Associated Executive Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs

The Associated Executive Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs originated in 1869 in answer to President Grant's Peace Policy, officially giving management of Native Americans in the Central Superintendency (Kansas and the "Indian Territory") to the Orthodox branch of the Society of Friends. These are primarily letters, reports and some miscellaneous manuscripts chiefly addressed to the chairman of the committee, Edward M. Wistar; articles, plans, maps and statistics related to the committee's work. Most of the material deals with the work of Friends in running mission stations in Oklahoma to the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma (Bah Kho-je), the Modoc Nation, the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma, the Otoe-Missouria Tribe of Indians, the Shawnee Tribe, the Osage Nation (Wahzhazhe) and other Native American peoples.
