The Governor of Ala. is responsible for making appointments to various state and local offices and for signing grants and commissions. This series consists of one petition recommending P.T. Harris for the position of judge of the First Judicial Circuit, a letter of resignation from Lewis B. Ewing, and a letter from former Pickens Co. Judge L. Marshall the appointment of his successor.

Title: Correspondence, 1821-1865.

This series consists of letterbooks containing copies of letters to and from the Governor, 1821-1849, 1861-1865. Most of the copies are of outgoing letters, though some incoming letters are also included. Some of the letters are routine in nature and may have been written for the Governor by the Secretary of State. Many of the letters concern important administrative decisions or express the opinion of the Governor on controversial subjects. Included are letters of Governors Pickens, G. Moore, S. Moore, Murphy, Gayle, Clay, Bagby, Fitzpatrick, Martin, Chapman, Shorter and Watts. Topics discussed include slavery, public lands, banks and banking, the militia, Indian affairs, internal improvements, surveys of boundary lines with Ga. and Fla., social welfare, state finances, the 1840s war with Mexico and the Civil War. Of particular interest are Gov. Gabriel Moore's views on prison reform, Gov. Gayle's position on the removal of white settlers from Creek Indian lands in 1833, the removal of the Cherokee Indians from the state, Ala.'s participation in the Mexican War, and the Civil War. The bulk of the Governors' incoming correspondence is described in the various series of each Governor's administration. The 1861 Dec. 5-1863 May 12 letters are indexed alphabetically by correspondent's name.

The Governor of Ala. may extradite criminals from other states. This process may also be referred to as requisition. This series consists of two letters concerning the requisition of a criminal named James B. Thomas. Thomas was being held in Augusta, Ga. on charges of grand larceny.

Title: Pardons, parole and clemency files, 1829-1831.

The Ala. Governor has the power to grant commutations to persons under sentence of death and to remit fines and forfeitures. This series consists of letters, petitions and pardon certificates relating to pardons from crimes, parole from sentences and remission of fines imposed. Some of the letters describe the crime in detail and give reasons why executive clemency should be granted. This series contains numerous letters and petitions requesting a pardon for Thomas Waddle of Lauderdale Co. who was sentenced to death for the murder of James May. Other criminals discussed include William Brasil (Brazil?), Charles Collier, Benjamin Eaton Frazier, Harrison Hood, and Moses Roberson. Other interesting cases include jailer John Huddleston fined for the negligent escape of prisoner Henry Augustine, John Patterson convicted for betting at cards and backgammon, and Adam Sheffield of St. Clair Co. convicted of violating stray livestock regulations.

James Thornton served as the Secretary of State of Ala. from 1824 to 1834. This series consists of two letters sent to Thornton. One letter, 1831 Oct. 18, from former governor Gabriel Moore, asks Thornton to send Moore a certificate of election confirming his election to the U.S. Senate.

This collection contains 143 pen and ink drawings, roughly measuring 8 x 10. The subjects depicted include prominent Alabamians such as Braxton Bragg Comer, William J. Samford, and Dr. Peter Bryce, and important historical events such as the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, the running of the first electric street car and the founding of various societies. The drawings run the gamut of Ala. history, beginning with prehistory and coming up to modern times.

Papers, containing for the most part legal documents concerning land claims in the Mobile (Ala.) area, dating from the Spanish period. Included in the case notes is the contention that the U.S. did not gain title to property in West Florida, only sovereignty from Spain, various arguments before the U.S. Senate, and correspondence in Spanish, French, and English. The collection also includes some financial receipts, plat maps of Mobile, and printed materials such as bills before the U.S. Congress.

Title: Administrative files, 1830-1831.

This series consists of the administrative files of Gov. Gabriel Moore containing letters, accounts, and warrants. The scope of this series is quite limited and it does not address many of the controversies which occurred during Moore's administration. Most of the items concern internal improvements or the sale of $100,000 of state stock to be used to increase the capital of the Bank of the State of Ala. The state stock correspondence appears to be copies of documents submitted by Gov. Murphy to the General Assembly on 1830 Dec. 13. Prominent correspondents include J.B. Leavens, J.L. Tindall, H. Perkins, George W. Crabb, John Delafield and J.D. Biers and Co. A number of letters concern internal improvements of roads and river navigation, especially the work of the Board of Internal Improvements. Included is a letter from Ga. governor George Gilmer concerning navigation of the Chattahoochee and Coosa Rivers, a copy of a letter to Miss. governor G.C. Brandon concerning plans for a Tennessee-Tombigbee River canal, warrants concerning road work performed from Coffeeville to Mobile and from Greensboro to Mobile, and a Board of Internal Improvements account with J.A. Dumeste for an 1830 examination of the Coosa River. Also included in this series is a copy of a printed letter sent by Moore to various governors of states in the U.S. enquiring about the provisions for dealing with criminals and the use of penitentiaries within the States.

Title: Family papers, 1818-1951.

Papers, 1818-1951, consisting chiefly of diary fragments and letters. The collection was acquired through two separate accessions many years a part. The collection remains divided according to accession because each accession was transcribed by different transcribers. The first accession includes diary fragments from 1836 concerning Frederick Weedon's treatment of victims of injuries, sickness, and wounds during the Seminole War of 1836, concentrating especially on his treatment of Chief Osceola. He also notes the cause of death of many soldiers and Native Americans and discusses some of his conversations with and observations of Osceola and other Native Americans. In addition to the diary fragments, there are letters, 1818-1840, which are to, from, or about Weedon family members and subjects discussed include settlement and homelife in the 1820s and 1830s; the Solon Moore case with Ala. governor Gabriel Moore; arms received from free blacks in 1835; the Seminole War of 1836 and the militia raised in Tuscaloosa, Ala.; the need for forgiveness and absence of prejudice; the negotiations in Apr. and May 1837 between Gen. Jesup and the Seminole Indians about their abiding by an agreement reached earlier, and the Seminoles' non-compliance; the death of Osceola in 1838; and the personal attack J. D. Wescott made on Weedon in 1840. The second accession consists of 66 items, 1823-1951, most of which have been transcribed by Patricia R. Wickman, author of Osceola's Legacy. It is divided into two sub-series: the Frederick Weedon papers, 1823-1849; and the Hamilton M. Weedon papers, 1854-1951. The Frederick Weedon papers consist of 16 items, chiefly letters to Weedon. Of particular interest are Weedon's diary fragments describing the death of Osceola and three certifications attesting to Weedon's possession of the head of Osceola. In an 1839 letter, L.N. Fowler inquires whether Weedon would be willing to part with the heads of Osceola and Uchee Billy. Also of interest is a letter, 15 Oct. 1832, from Francis Cash describing a potential duel between James D. Westcott and Thomas Baltzell. Accompanying the letter is a document establishing rules for the duel as well as date and place. Other letters concern military and Indian activity in and around St. Augustine from 1835-1837. A small notebook describes a journey to Memphis in 1823. It also has inventories of personal and household items as well as receipts for slave sales. This series includes two fragments of 1832 letters written in French by Antoinette Martin to James G.L. Martin. Their connection to the Weedons is unknown. The Hamilton M. Weedon papers, 1854-1951, consist chiefly of letters to Hamilton and includes two letters from his father Frederick. An 1854 letter from Frederick refers to money for Hamilton to obtain his M.D. There is a small card indicating that he attended medical lectures at the Albany Medical College in 1855. Also of interest is an 1858 passport issued by the Spanish Consul in Key West, Fla., permitting Dr. H.M. Weedon to travel to Cuba. Several items concern Weedon's service as a Confederate Surgeon. Included among these are measurements for his uniform and a "Certificate of Disability" for Pvt. Warren D. Jackson. Post-Civil War letters chiefly concern family affairs.

This series consists of two letters concerning rewards offered by the Governor for the apprehension of criminals. Included is a letter from A.B. Cooper of Claiborne, Ala. to James Dellet describing the escape of a male slave named "Harry" from the jail where he was being held for the murder of "Foster". It was believed that the escape was aided by Harry's master "Garner". The letter contains a description of Harry and asks for assistance in apprehending the escapee. Dellet forwarded the letter to Moore for the Governor's attention.
