This collection consists of 13 Hollinger boxes arranged in 3 series: 1. Michigan towns and cities, ca. 1932-1956. There are approximately 691 b&w negatives. The 9x9 inch negatives are oblique aerial views, which provide a representative collection of Michigan's towns and cities. The quality of the negatives ranges from poor to good. Some negatives have a 8x10 inch b&w print filed with them. 2. Southeastern Michigan aerial survey, 1935. There are approx. 4,400 9x9 inch b&w negatives. 3. Isle Royal aerial survey, ca. 1929. This series consists of approx. 636 9x9 inch b&w negatives. The quality of the negatives ranges from poor to good.

Title: Richard C. Bell Drawings and Other Materials 1961-2003

The Richard C. Bell Drawings and Other Materials, 1961-2003, document the professional activities of landscape architect Richard C. Bell and his architectural firms. The collection consists of landscape plans and planting details, prospective elevations, and technical drawings, as well as associated architecture plans created by partnering architectural firms. A small number of project files, which document both residential and public spaces, are also found in the collection. Bell’s projects included private residences, subdivision developments, municipal and civic structures, various businesses, and some two dozen college and universities. Richard C. Bell (1928- ), a native of Manteo, N.C., received a degree in landscape architecture from North Carolina State University's College of Design (then, the North Carolina State College School of Design) in 1950. Afterwards, he apprenticed under Simonds & Simonds of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Frederick B. Stresau of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. At the age of 21, he became the youngest designer to receive the Prix de Rome, allowing him to study in Europe for two years. He became a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. In 1954, Bell became a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and he was elected to Fellowship in the organization in 1980. In 1955, Bell founded his first firm in Raleigh, N.C., and for many years operated the business from its award-winning office space, Water Garden Office Park. His son-in-law Dennis Glazener worked for the firm, and eventually became a partner. Bell Retired in 2007.

Michigan. History Division. Bicentennial oral history project, 1974-1975.

Title: Bicentennial oral history project, 1974-1975.

Record group 82-111 consists of 14 audio cassettes recorded during 1974-75 as part of the Bicentennial oral history project. The History Division of the Michigan Dept. of State conducted 14 interviews as part of this country's 200th anniversary. The first interviews focused on the commercial fishing industry of Michigan and reminiscences range from 1920's-1970's (Vercil Bugg, Floyd Deming, Henry Engelhard, Vaino Erkilla, Myrtle Lang, Robert Masse, Tom Peterson, Amanda and Bernard Rimpela, Otto Schmidt, William Vavdrevil, Marian Wiita, William Wiita). Tom Towle was interviewed on the state's manufacturing interests. Towe, a graduate of Yale University (1920), worked for the Wright Brothers in his hometown of Dayton, Ohio, where he specialized in stress analysis. Other jobs included the Glen L. Martin Company of Cleveland, Ohio, the Stout Metal Airplane Company in Detroit, and the Ford Motor Company where he helped to design the Tri-motor Airplane. Towe finished his career as Chief Engineer for the Hudson Motor Car Company. Talbert Abrams was interviewed on aerial photogrammetry (Abrams Aerial Survey Corporation), his military service, and his employment as an airmail mechanic and air freight pilot. Some Lansing, Michigan history is found in the latter part of the interview.
