Collection of approximately 50 autograph letters and documents relating to members of the Royal Navy and the British Army, nearly all dating from between 1790 and 1830. Many of the letters are brief business letters relating to awards of prize money; requests for arrears of pay; testimonies of service on various ships or with particular regiments; and postage subsidies. A 1695 letter addressed to Cotton Dudley offers excuses for a soldier's absence from the Isle of Wight, and a tax document signed by Sir John D'Oyly contains an engraving of a Channel navigation chart and lighthouses. A 1779 letter from the firm of Andrew Buchanan & Co. details the sale of the ship Lilly in New York City. Several letters are related to service in the Peninsular War, including an 1818 letter by John Bromhead. A letter by the Earl of Clarendon mentions the price riots in Guildford, and a letter by the Earl of Mayo refers to the Catholic question in Ireland. An 1826 letter from Admiral Theodore Jones denounces the postal service at Tunbridge Wells. Other figures represented include Geoffrey Delhoste, Sir John Orde, and Henry Vansittart.
