The complex and diverse prose of Anaïs Nin mirrors her life. She published nonfiction, journals, short stories, novels, and erotica, and worked as a model, a dancer, and a psychoanalyst. Most of her prose was influenced by surrealism, and features an experimental style and psychological themes. The publication of her diaries, begun at the age of eleven as an open letter to her departed father, brought her fame and made her a sought-after lecturer. Her artistic prose, colorful life, and relationship with Henry and June Miller have made her legacy controversial and unsettled.
A writer born in Paris, of Spanish and French-Danish parents, she moved to New York in 1914. She sometimes wrote under the pseudonym Ian Hugo but is especially known for her 10 volume Diary of Anaïs Nin. She also wrote novels, short stories, and erotica. Her association with Henry Miller and Lawrence Durrell, among others, is evident in her writings.

Anaïs Nin was a French and American novelist, poet, essayist, diarist, and short-story writer.
Anaïs Nin (February 21, 1903-January 14, 1977) was born in Neuilly, France, but moved to New York City with her mother and brothers after her parents separated. She abandoned formal education to work as a model. In 1923 she married Hugh Parker Guiler, moved to Paris with him, and embarked on her writing career. Her first published work was a critical study of D.H. Lawrence, D.H. Lawrence: An Unprofessional Study . Nin began writing erotica in the 1940s, the most famous of which was Delta of Venus . She wrote explicitly about her fantasies as well as her sexual experiences in extensive diaries which spanned nearly six decades, including details about intimate friendships and passionate relationships with leading literary figures including Henry Miller, Edmund Wilson, Gore Vidal, James Agee, and Lawrence Durrell. After her death, her second husband, Rupert Pole, arranged for the unexpurgated publication of her diaries which became more acclaimed than any of her other writing.
Anaïs Nin was a French and American novelist, poet, essayist, diarist, and short-story writer.
Anaïs Nin -- diarist, critic and novelist -- was born in Paris. Her parents separated and at 11 she began her diary in the form of letters, never sent to her father. Approximately 3,300 pages of her diary were in print by 1984 - they record her youth, her increasing dialogue with feminism, and the later volumes explore the teaching and confessional functions of the diary. Nin has also written several novels including Delta of Venus (1977 - erotica) and a continuous novel -- in 5 volumes -- beginning with This hunger (1945).
Anaïs Nin was born in Neuilly, France, on Feb. 21, 1903; she married Ian Hugo when she was 20 years old; her first published book was D.H. Lawrence : An unprofessional study (1932); her writing brought her in contact with Henry Miller, who became a major influence in her life; she is best known for the publication of The diary of Anaïs Nin; died in Los Angeles, CA, on Jan. 14, 1977.
Writer; New York, N.Y.
Anais Nin (1903-1977) was a Cuban-French author who became famous for her published journals, which span more than 60 years, from when she was 11 to shortly before her death at 74.

Anaïs Nin was born in Neuilly, France, to two artistic parents. Her father, Joaquin Nin was a Cuban pianist and composer, and her mother Rosa Culmell was also Cuban, but of French and Danish ancestry and was a classically trained singer. After her parents separated, her mother moved Anaïs and her two brothers, Thorvald Nin and Joaquin Nin-Culmell from Barcelona to New York City. According to her diaries, Volume One, 1931 - 1934, Nin abandoned formal schooling at the age of 16 and began working as a model. In 1923 Nin published her first work: a critical evaluation of D.H. Lawrence called D.H. Lawrence: An Unprofessional Study. She also explored the field of psychotherapy, studying under the likes of Otto Rank, a disciple of Sigmund Freud. According to her diaries, Volume One, 1931-1934, Nin shared a Bohemian lifestyle with Henry Miller during her time in Paris. There is no mention of her husband in that edited edtion. In 1939 Nin returned to New York and later appeared in the Kenneth Anger film Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954) and the Maya Deran film Ritual in Transfigured Time (1946), and in Bells of Atlantis (1952). In 1947, at the age of 44, she met and began living with Rupert Pole (1919-2006), sixteen years her junior. On March 17th, 1955 she married him and the pair went to live in California. Anaïs Nin Papers, ca. 1910-1977
Title:
Anaïs Nin Papers, ca. 1910-1977
The papers of Anaïs Nin document the life of the noted diarist and novelist. Nin began her diary at the age of 11 in 1914 when she moved to the United States with her family. She continued to write in her diary as she grew up, married and settled into the role of a banker's wife. The diaries chronicle her interest in psychoanalysis, her literary aspirations and her relationships with various writers and artists, including Otto Rank, Henry Miller and Antonin Artaud. The diaries held by UCLA conclude in 1965. In 1946 her diaries took on a different form. Instead of the bound journals she traditionally used, the diaries became compilations of loose pages which included her diary entries interspersed with letters, ephemera, and other writings by Nin kept together in portfolios. The papers also include manuscripts of some of Nin's short stories and erotica, some correspondence, a number of taped interviews and speeches and appearances by Nin in underground films and a documentary by Robert Snyder.

Title:
Jean Rubin letters received, 1949-1963.
Rubin receives letters from T.S. Eliot, John Crowe Ransom, Wallace Stevens, Chauncey Brewster Tinker, and Lionel Trilling declining to recommend Lionel Ziprin for a Guggenheim fellowship; Mark Van Doren agrees to meet Ziprin before sponsoring him. Trilling declines to comment on her poetry. Thornton Wilder critiques her thesis on his writings. John Hall Wheelock rejects her poems for Poets of today IV. Anaïs Nin writes about an aborted magazine, agrees to read Rubin's stories, compliments her on her prose recordings, and asks her to review Seduction of the minotaur. Melville Cane comments favorably on her "Theme and variations," and asks her to send anything else that would interest him. Mary Ellen Chase congratulates her on "the success of the poetry" and regrets she will miss the writers' group meeting because of ill health. Marianne Moore agrees to record some of her poems, returns a contract [not included], and suggests changing the company name from Version Records to Rubin Records.

Argus Book Shop correspondence, 1857-1955, 1930-1944
Title:
Argus Book Shop correspondence 1857-1955 1930-1944
The Argus Book Shop Correspondence consists of the shop's "author correspondence" files holding letters between Ben Abramson and his staff and more than four hundred writers, artists, printers, critics, and illustrators. While some of the folders hold single or just a few letters, Abramson had more extensive relationships with many writers and artists, including John Austen, Faith Baldwin, March Cost, Frederic Dannay, Norman Davey, Rhys Davies, August Derleth, Robin Douglas, Joan Marshall Grant, W. G. Hardy, Claude Houghton, William McFee, Henry Miller, Frank Cheyne Papé, Louis Paul, Frederic Prokosch, William Saroyan, Harold Sinclair, and John Steinbeck. Hundreds of Abramson's typed carbon replies are present in the files; in them, he discusses business and literary concerns, along with his philosophies and opinions on a wide range of topics. While the lack of financial, inventory, vendor, and publishing records keep the collection from being a complete record of the Argus Book Shop, the correspondence files present reveal how Ben Abramson developed business and personal relationships with authors, illustrators, and shop patrons, and in particular with British authors, the obstacles he encountered while conducting business during World War II. The collection also includes, in Series II, more than forty undated literary essays, poems, and book reviews which may have been submitted for an "Argus miscellany" that Abramson often discussed in his correspondence but apparently never produced. The writings do not appear in Abramson's journal Reading and collecting, and likely date after 1938. The Argus Book Shop correspondence files were acquired by Philip D. Sang (1902-1975), a Chicago businessman, philanthropist, and collector of historical and literary manuscripts, who then donated the material to Yale.

De Pereda, Prudencio, 1912- . Papers, 1935-1973.
Title:
Papers, 1935-1973.
Manuscripts of short stories, novels, and other writings, correspondence, clippings of reviews, and miscellany trace the writing career of Prudencio De Pereda, 1935-1973. The collection depicts the author's early career in New York, his interactions with editors and publishers, and with other writers of the period. De Pereda's work reflects the influence of Ernest Hemingway, especially during the Spanish Civil War, when they met and worked together on the commentary for the films SPAIN IN FLAMES and THE SPANISH EARTH. De Pereda's later literary output is represented by manuscripts of his three novels (ALL THE GIRLS WE LOVED, FIESTA, and WINDMILLS IN BROOKLYN) and his translation of JEWISH GAUCHOS OF THE PAMPAS. Correspondents include Carlos Baker, Alvah Cecil Bessie, Paul Bowles, Richard Burton, Padraic Colum, Victor Gollancz, Ernest Hemingway (photocopies only), James Laughlin, William March, Anäis Nin, Edward O'Brien, Philip Rahv, and Richard Wright.

This two-box collection chiefly contains the letters sent to Becker while he was incarcerated from 1944 to about 1948; they were preserved for him by Ada Rutledge, and by his literary agent Bertha Klausner. Of particular interest are letters from Henry Miller, Caresse Crosby, Dorothy Norman, Frances Sanger, and Anaïs Nin.
