Correspondence of the Rotch and Lawrence families, interrelated through the marriage of Annie B. Lawrence and Benjamin S. Rotch, including their courtship letters. The bulk of the Rotch family papers are letters between Benjamin and his grandfather William Rotch, Jr. of New Bedford, Mass. Lawrence family correspondence includes letters from Abbott Lawrence to his daughter Annie while he was a U.S. Representative from Mass.; and correspondence between Benjamin and Annie Rotch, and Abbott and his daughter Katherine "Kitty" Lawrence, while the Rotches were touring Europe and while Abbott was in London serving as U.S. ambassador to the Court of St. James between 1849-52, describing his work and their life and activities in London. Family letters during the mid-1840s also discuss Annie's health and her participation in hydrotherapy at Brattleboro, Vt. Additional correspondents include James Lawrence (Annie's brother), William J. Rotch (Benjamin's brother), and Charles Sumner.
