The Holden, Mass. First Baptist Church Records, 1804-1909, consist of eight volumes and one folder of manuscripts. The volumes include early parish records, 1804-1857, with minutes of church meetings that detail church finances and dealings with difficult parishioners; building committee records, church treasurer's accounts; and records of the Sabbath School and the Dorcas Society and Ladies' Social Union, which were mainly charitable organizations. The folder contains material, 1828-1877, concerning the Baptist churches of Holden and Princeton, Mass., which separated from Holden in 1828 to form its own parish. There are church meeting warrants, letters concerning requests for dismission from the Holden and Princeton churches (several of which contain detailed references to members' theological differnces with their churches), membersip certificates, tax bills, Holden building committee financial accounts, pew deeds, and requests of Sterling, Mass., residents to form their own church in 1837. The folder also contains an 1877 manuscript titled "Historical Sketch of the Sabbath School" by William Cobb Metcalf (1814- ), and a printed history, L. H. Bradford's Memorial History of the Sabbath School of the Wachusett Baptist Sabbath School Convention . . . (Worcester, Mass., 1879).
