Title: Papers, c.1849-1925.

Papers, correspondence, account books, genealogical material and printed matter of various members of the Lefferts family of New York City and Long Island. In particular, the papers relate to Marshall Lefferts, his wife, Mary Allen Lefferts, their sons, Marshall Clifford and William Henry Lefferts, and William Henry's wife, Edith Crane Lefferts, and their son Barent Lefferts. The papers of Marshall Lefferts contain material relating to his involvement with the telegraph and the English telegrapher, Alexander Bain (1850s); his interest in the Peekskill (N.Y.) Plow Works and in Mount Florence, the Peekskill estate of Daniel H. Craig (1860s-1870s); and papers pertaining to his part in obtaining an British patent for Thomas A. Edison's "Electric Pen and Duplicating Press," including several letters of Edison (1876). There are also papers reflecting Lefferts' interest in the Equitable Gas Light & Construction Co. of N.Y.C. and in umbrella tip fasteners invented by Robert Lublinski of Great Britain. In addition there are letters, 1870s, to William Henry Lefferts from family and business associates in N.Y.C. while he was in China & Japan; papers relating to the estates of William Henry & Edith Crane Lefferts; genealogical material on the Lefferts, Crane and Cozine families ; and papers of the Wetherill family of Pennsylvania, especially material relating to the Civil War service of the Rev. Joseph Wetherill as well as several letters to him from Morgan Dix.
