Selected microfilm reels of letters, reports, and other papers concerning Indian populations, education, health, agriculture, subsistence, warfare, land transactions, annuities, depredations, claims, traders, agency employees and administration, and other aspects of the federal government's relations with Indian tribes under the administration of various agencies and superintendencies. The files selected pertain primarily to the Ojibwe, Dakota, Winnebago, Sauk, and Fox, but also to the Blackfeet, Cheyenne, Crow, Mandan, Ottawa, Pawnee, and other tribes of the upper Midwest and plains area.

Stevens, Mr. (Robert Smith), 1824-1893. Papers, 1856-1875.

Title: Papers, 1856-1875.

This collection contains more than 1,800 documents. Most are of a business nature although there is some of a personal nature. Some of the correspondence relates to Stevens peripherally and there are several newspaper articles relating to him and his work. Most of the collection pertains to his work and association with Kansas: as an attorney and land agent in Lecompton and as general manager of the M-K-T Railroad. The earlier material included in this collection provides valuable insights into his personal, political, and professional life in Kansas immediately prior to the Civil War. There is also information on his work at the Sac & Fox Indian Agency, Quantrill's Raid on Lawrence, Kan., and the Atlantic & Pacific and Missouri Pacific railroads. Since the collection ends in 1875, there is no information about his term as a Congressman, nor earlier and later careers. Correspondents include George Denison and Levi Parsons.

Volume one in the collection contains letters sent between June 23, 1840 and August 5, 1847 by agent John Beach of the Iowa Sac and Fox Agency to T. Hartley Crawford (Commissioner of Indian Affairs), Joshua Pilcher (Superintendent of Indian Affairs in St. Louis), the governor of Iowa, military officers, other agents, employees, treasury official and other. Volume 1A is the letter book of Agent Perry Fuller and includes 16 pages of accounts as well as letters (1849-1861) to A.B. Greenwood (Commissioner of Indian Affairs), A.M. Robinson (Superintendent of Indian Affairs at St. Joseph, Mo.), Charles E. Mix (acting Commissioner of Indian Affairs), and William P. Dole (Commissioner of Indian Affairs). The final volume (volume 2) contains copies of letters and other documents sent by Agent John H. Pickering and Clerk C.C. Pickett to the commissioner and superintendent of Indian Affairs and others. Volume 2 includes an index.
