Financial papers, correspondence, legal documents, personal papers, sheet music, printed items, and photographs. Some papers of the related Pirrie and Gray families are included. The largest series of the collection consists of financial papers which chiefly reflect activities of the Turnbull and Bowman families as planters in Louisiana from the early 1800s into the 20th century. These include early documents pertaining to John and Walter Turnbull and their business concerns as traders of furs, slaves, horses, indigo, and produce in Louisiana, Mississippi, and the West Florida region. Correspondence reflects subjects documented by the financial papers including the colonial fur trade, planting, and economic conditions in Louisiana. Some personal family letters relate to social events, religion, education, and domestic matters. Legal documents chiefly relate to the Bowman, Pirrie, and Gray families but include Turnbull family legal agreements and suits. Some documents relate to activities of Ruffin Gray and James Pirrie as alcaldes during the Spanish governance of Louisiana. Of special note in the plantation and personal papers are lists of slaves and lists of plants purchased. Music and other printed items were collected by members of the Turnbull, Bowman and related families. Photographs primarily depict members of the Bowman family and Rosedown Plantation. In addition to Rosedown Plantation, the papers document Oakley, Middleplace, Hazelwood, Homochitto, Gross Tete, Catalpa, Styopa, Inheritance, De Soto, Grove, Frogmoor, Prospect, and Home Plantations.

The Daniel Turnbull Family Papers contain correspondence, plantation records, and financial and legal papers documenting the lives of the Turnbull and Bowman families between 1826 and 1913. The papers document the operation of Rosedown Plantation and Grosse Tete Plantation, the sale of cotton and molasses, family relationships, the pursuit of Daniel Turnbull's Civil War claims, and land ownership.

Correspondence, plantation management papers, financial papers, legal documents, personal papers, and printed and graphic materials document the lives of members of the Turnbull, Pirrie, Lyons, Bowman, and to a lesser extent, the Barrow, Stirling, and Fort families. Correspondence discusses plantation, financial, and social matters and includes antebellum letters. A letter (1799) from Thomas Durnford to John Turnbull discusses attempts to recover two runaway slaves. A letter (1854) from John Sidney Thrasher, author and editor, to James P. Bowman requests that he read and comment on Thrasher's essay CUBA AND LOUISIANA. Letters from Henry Lyons (1841, 1850, n.d.) describe economic conditions in San Francisco during the Gold Rush. The bulk of the correspondence is of Sarah T. Bowman and her children. Plantation records of William B. Turnbull and James P. Bowman include slave lists and plantation diaries which document Frogmoor and Rosedown Plantations. The diaries contain lists of slaves and details of plantation management. Financial papers include factors' statements, mostly of Daniel Turnbull and James P. Bowman, which document sugar and cotton produced on Rosedown, Middleplace, Inheritance, Hazelwood, and other plantations. Among the financial papers are receipts and statements for goods and services. A receipt (1855) for furniture and other items purchased from Prudent Francis Mallard by William B. Turnbull is included. Legal documents of the Turnbull, Pirrie, Lyons, Matthews, Barrow, Bowman, and Fort families consist mostly of land title documents and succession papers. Legal papers of John B. Dawson, a parish judge and relative of the Barrow family, are present. Some of Dawson's letters are included. Personal papers and printed and graphic materials reflect the lives and interests of family members, particularly the Bowmans. A legal opinion (n.d.) on the rights of married women over their paraphernal property is included.
