Title: Guide to the New York Bureau of Legal Advice Records, 1917-1919

The New York Bureau of Legal First Aid was organized in 1917 with a grant from the Women's Peace Party. Lead by attorney Charles Recht and feminist Frances M. Witherspoon, it was the first organization to furnish free legal advice and counsel to anyone who came into conflict with the new laws related to America's entry into World War I, including draft resisters, conscientious objectors, and deserters. By 1918 it was aiding at least 5,000 clients and changed its name to the New York Bureau of Legal Advice (NYBLA). Though raided by the Bureau of Investigation in 1918, the NYBLA continued with its anti-war campaigns until shortly after the Armistice was signed. The records contain correspondence, office files, case histories, photographs, clippings, and press releases relating to selective service exemption, draft evasion, conscientious objector status, military discharge, desertion, amnesty, civil liberties and deportation.

The records contain correspondence, office files, case histories, clippings, and press releases relating to selective service exemption, draft evasion, conscientious objector status, military discharge, desertion, amnesty, civil liberties and deportation. Persons represented include Charles Recht, lawyer, who did much of the bureau's legal work and Fannie M. Witherspoon, secretary. Prominent correspondents include Roger N. Baldwin, of National Civil Liberties Bureau, Ella Reeve (Mother) Bloor, Albert DeSilver, M. Eleanor Fitzgerald of the League for the Amnesty of Political Prisoners and Walter Nelles.

Materials relating to Hand's private and public life, his activities as an alumnus of Harvard University, his friendship with Felix Frankfurter, and to the Hand family. Includes material on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, New York City; information on the Progressive movement (1909-1914) and the beginnings of the New Republic and its early staff; and transcripts of oral-history interviews conducted by Gerald Gunther of Stanford Law School and others, of Judge Hand, his family and associates.

Photographs, ca.1845-1930, including cased photographs, black and white prints, and one retouched to include color. The cased photographs are all daguerreotypes. They include images of Malcolm D. Graham, the John Graham family, Jerusha May Rives, and the Thomas R. Northington family. The black and white photographs include images of Hugh M. Caffey (b.1854), Sallie Caffey Dalison, Hugh W. Caffey (1833-1919), Francis F. Caffey (b.1868), Thomas Caffey, Jerusha May Rives Caffey, Samuel W. Catts, Eugene M. Caffey, Thomas Caffey (1784-1878), Mary Patrick Caffey (1786-1851), Hugh Patrick Caffey, Jane Caroline Dunkin, and Dorothy Northington. Many are photos of portraits. There is also a retouched photo in color of Maude Mae Caffey, as well as black and white images of the Clifton house in Verbena, Ala., and of an 1870 painting of Samuel W. Catts' home in Pleasant Hill, Dallas Co., Ala., done by Lillian Lee Catts. Most of the photographs were annotated in ink by the donor. There are some notes with the daguerreotypes.
