This short interview with Mac Pruitt is concerned with the Council for Chemical Research and starts with an account of the foundation meeting at Midland and its origins in Pruitt's fear that U.S. chemical technology was endangered by poor cooperation between university and industry. During the course of the interview, Pruitt describes the working of the task force he set up which eventually led to the formal establishment of the Council. The relations with the American Chemical Society are briefly reviewed, the membership and the staffing of the Council are outlined, and the meaning of the logo is explained. The conversation ends with Pruitt's assessment of the success of the Council for Chemical Research over the first decade of its existence.

In this interview Mac Pruitt discusses his early upbringing in a rural area of Texas and his struggles to complete undergraduate education during the Depression. After starting as a control chemist on the graveyard shift at the Dow facility in Freeport, Texas, Pruitt progressed through the laboratories and embarked on his extensive studies of the ionic polymerization of cyclic oxide monomers. The circumstances of his move into senior research management and his eventual transfer to Midland, Michigan, are embellished by Pruitt's reflections on R&D and on his initiatory role in the formation of the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology and the Council for Chemical Research.

Homer Daniels Babbidge was born in 1925 in Weston, Massachusetts, and raised in New Haven, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale University in 1945 with a degree in political science and subsequently earned his master's and doctorate from the same institution. Babbidge became president of the University of Connecticut in 1962 and remained in the office until his retirement in 1972. His years at UConn were among the most productive, and the most turbulent, in the University's history. Homer D. Babbidge died in 1984.
