This collection includes correspondence, literary manuscripts, memoranda, pamphlets and other material relative to the professional career of Cullen B. Gosnell. There are approximately 1580 letters, notes, telegrams and interoffice memoranda of which the largest part falls into the period 1949-1963. Materials relate to Gosnell's book, FUNDAMENTALS OF AMERICAN NATIONAL GOVERNMENT, and other publications; the Institute of Citizenship and other organizations in which Gosnell was involved; Wofford College; the county unit system of state government; the Georgia state constitution; and the book fund established in his name at the Emory University Library. Correspondents include Emory faculty and students, publishers, educators, and Georgia and national political figures. Photographs are of Gosnell.

This collection contains correspondence, personal letters, printed materials such as reports, articles, and essays, and newspaper clippings. The majority of the correspondence pertains to a 1958 meeting of the Fellowship of the Concerned. After being reported in a Montgomery weekly newspaper, Montgomery Home News, white fellowship members were criticized and harassed. The printed materials deal with a wide variety of civil rights topics and include comments by religious and civic leaders. The newspaper clippings document the response to the meeting of the Fellowship and the violence directed at the Freedom Riders, black and white youth who rode buses through the South in order to stand up for civil rights.

Its greatest period of concentration is circa 1933-1949. Earlier correspondence is generally personal in nature, and later correspondence deals largely with Georgia Tech affairs. Letters of Ernest Hartsock (3 items, 1925-1930) and Lillian Smith (54 items, 1936-1948) are included here. There is also an exchange of letters between Mr. Rainey and his longtime friend, the historian C. Vann Woodward (213 items, 1929-1938). Subject folders in the collection cover a wide range of Mr. Rainey's activities. Folders with the greatest concentration of material include those concerned with the following: Commission On Interracial Cooperation, Committee for Georgia, Emory University, Georgia Education Association, Georgia Tech (78 folders), miscellaneous material, the poll tax, Lillian Smith and Paula Snelling, Southern Conference for Human Welfare, and the Southern Regional Council.
