In a letter 1862 April 21, Bryant writes to James Lawson, agent for South Carolina author William Gilmore Simms, about an indirect attack by the Charleston "Mercury" on Lawson for robbing Simms of his earnings. With the letter are a clipped letter to the editor of"The New York Times" 1862 April 26 from Park Benjamin denying charges against Lawson and a second undated clipping quoting the original "Mercury" statement.

Letter, 29 Nov. 1860 (Columbia, S.C.), to [James] Lawson commenting on his recent book of poems sent by "our mutual friend, Dr. [William Gilmore] Simms," the difficulties of presiding over "The Female College" with her husband, William Henry Martin, reporting the prosperity the intitution enjoyed under "my husband's wise & prudent oversight," her inability to write poetry because of "toil & care," the political situation, sectional tensions and anticipation of secession, and the rumor that "Simms... will lay aside the pen for the sword... I still hope for peace." Two scrapbooks, 1860-1880 (compiled in Columbia, S.C.), consisting of articles, news, and poems including index and notes; second volume consists of Martin's autobiography re her membership in the Methodist Church; childhood in Scotland; immigration to the U.S.; family life; marriage to Rev. William Henry Martin; motherhood; religion; and thoughts about Biblical figures.

The collection contains a commonplace book of miscellaneous writings by Lawson, correspondence, and miscellaneous family papers including legal and financial papers and correspondence. Correspondence includes twelve letters from Scottish author and publisher John Mennons concerning his interest in American literature and his desire to bring it to the British public in his "Literary Coronal." He is especially interested in the works of Fitz-Greene Halleck, James Gordon Brooks, James Gates Percival, and Washington Irving. He discusses the exchange of books and newspapers with Lawson, and mentions the coronation and travels of George IV, a duel involving London Magazine editor John Scott, and business and political crises. Family correspondence includes eleven letters from Edward and Lawson Sandford to their mother Mrs. Thomas S. Sandford. Lawson describes his experiences in California aboard the "McArthur" and the Haggin system of irrigation in Bakersfield. A letter from Jon W.C. Alexander to James Lawson, 1878 July 22, discusses financial matters. The collection also contains a stock certificate of the New York Gas Regulator Company, 1853; a deed of sale for Lawson's house, 1863; and four checks signed by him.
