Five account books with entries for services and supplies for ships, sale of cargos, and payments to sailors and their widows. Includes many names of ships, captains and merchants. Also includes estate accounts for Samuel Hale and investments in companies such as Portsmouth Whaling Co., Portsmout Steamboat Co., and Portsmouth Woolen Co.; letter copybook (1831-1838) from Hale and Rollins, Portsmouth, N.H., to various shipmasters and owners in the U.S. and foreign ports; William Hale, Jr.'s store ledger (1827-1835); and miscellaneous loose items.

Hale, Hezekiah, 1814-1890. Hezekiah Hale journal, 1836-1877.

Title: Hezekiah Hale journal, 1836-1877.

Diary and log book kept by a Glastonbury, Connecticut, farmer and seaman. Diary entries include notations on his travels, visits, and work. The most interesting entries are while he was on merchant and whaling voyages. His first trip, 1836, was on the Bark Brothers of Boston that sailed to India. The account is not complete, however. He took up his pen again on January 1, 1841, when he sailed to New Orleans. His next voyages were on whaling ships: August 1841-June 1843 on an unnamed vessel; August 1843-April 1845 on the Bark Halcyon; and on the Ship Alert from June 1845-December 31 when the entries stop, although the voyage was not complete. Entries include remarks on the weather, the latitude and longitude of the vessel, and strength of the wind and the amount of sail set. There are also whale stamps, a drawing of icebergs in January 1842, and he mentions hunting kangaroo in Australia in June 1844. The volume was later used by Hezekiah's son William T. Hale to record his farming and work accounts, 1874-1877.
