Title: Autograph letters signed from R. Simpson, London, to Furnivall [manuscript], 19th century March 2-20.

Consists of two letters (1) and (2) and one partial letter (3). (1) Dated March 2, with a note at the end of the letter dated March 4. Discusses a note by "Barry Cornwall," on the Shakespearian authorship of Pericles in his Memoirs of Ben Jonson; also mentions that he cannot undertake reviewing German books, except when they are very short; (2) Dated March 20. Concerns Fleay and "a difficulty" he would like Fleay to explain regarding prose, verse and rhymes in Shakespeare's plays. He refers to Comedy of errors, Romeo and Juliet, Merry wives of Windsor, As you like it, Twelfth night and All's well that ends well and others; (3) Undated partial letter. Mentions a paper he is working on on Richard III; wonders if Fleay has any theory on the abdication scene. (1) and (2) Addressed from 4 Victoria Road, Clapham.

James Spencer Northcote papers contain materials concerning discreet parts of Northcote's life after his conversion to Catholicism. The collection primarily consists of correspondence between Northcote and John Henry Newman, Richard Simpson, James Burns, and Fr. Ambrose Rose St. John. The correspondence mainly relates to articles publised in The rambler. There is also a notebook that includes Northcote's notes on and the text of sermons delivered by him and other individuals between 1852 and 1876.

Russell, Mr. S[nelgrove], Mr. Thomas, [Edward Viles?], a bookseller and other unidentified persons Letters to Fleay discuss the order of Shakespeare's plays and many textual matters; there are references to Dr. Appleton, P.A. Daniel, N. Delius, J.W. Hales, Richard Simpson, W.W. Skeat, James Spedding, Tennyson, W.A. Wright and other literary figures. In letters to Browning, Furnivall urges him to publish his wife's poetry in a cheap edition and to write on certain contemporary themes. Also, Fleay's drafts of two letters from himself to Abbott and Fleay's copy of one from Furnivall to Abbott, 1874, (155-157); Fleay's notes on some of the letters to him from Furnivall (115); a letter from W.C. H[azlitt] to Furnivall, July 29, 1869 (133); and a copy of a letter from Horace G. Bowen to Furnivall, March 7, 1890, about the Browning family (158). There are two copies of a printed notice from Furnivall as spokesman for the New Shakespeare Society and one for the Browning Society.
