Collection consists principally of letters, draft letters and letters received, chronologically arranged. The letters illustrate William Tudor's activities as a merchant in Boston and the development of the ice business with his brother, Frederic, his travels in Europe, the rise of the North American Review and Tudor's literary endeavors, and finally, his difficult role as U.S. Consul in Peru during the war of liberation from Spain. Papers include Tudor's account of a trip through Middlesex Co. into N.H., ca. 1794, an extensive letters to his father, 1797, reporting on affairs in Boston; letters, 1798-1801, mostly from a trip to France ; letters, draft letters, 1811-1812, to Stephen Higginson, James Monroe, Josiah Quincy, Frederic Tudor and others; material relating to the North American Review; letters received, 1815-1823 from Timothy Pickering, John Pickering, John Vaughan, John Davis, William Lee, Robert Hallowell Gardiner, William Roscoe, Samuel Gilman, Robert Walsh and others; and letters received as consul, 1823-1826, from family members and Boston merchants mostly seeking Tudor's assistance as U.S. Consul recovering confiscated cargo, ships and imprisioned crew.

Scrapbook kept by Anne Scafe, containing clippings from London newspapers and magazines, with some clippings from regional and Scottish publications as well as manuscripts and letters from the Spencer and Devonshire family members, including a letter from Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire; from Lady Sarah Lyttelton announcing her marriage; a manuscript poem written by "Caroline Lamb's page" with a watercolor portrait, dated 1807 at Holywell House; a letter recounting the visit of the Grand Duke Nicholas to Chatsworth in December 1816; an account of the death of Lady Charlotte Finch. Many of the clippings center around the announcements of births, marriages, deaths, and the settlement of the estates of these two families and their circle as well as announcements of their social engagements, political activities, scandals, etc. The clippings include references to Horace Walpole; the theatrical world; new inventions; style; foreign travel; domestic and foreign politics, especially the revolution in France and reports on the French royal family and later the Bonaparte family. Also included are autographs of prominent British nobility, including the King, and foreign dignitaries and royalty. In addition to the clippings, the scrapbook includes a variety of ephermal items given to Scafe by members of the extended family such as as well as ephemeral items from their travels, political, and social activities; calling cards and letters of introduction given to Sir William Ponsonby by members of the Russian aristocracy in 1805 and similar items from his trip to Spain in 1809; autographs of foreign royalty; invitations to the funeral of William Pitt a memorial to Lord Nelson, and the trial of Lord Viscount Melville (1805). Scafe also includes clippings and ephemera of a more general nature: humorous anecdotes, reports on curious events, jokes, odd behaviors; epitaphs, poems, epigrams; advertisements for employment as well advertisements by tradespeople; announcements and broadsides of events such as lottery drawings; several promissary notes; and etchings. Scafe includes two lengthy test: one from The Morning Post's account of the writing of "Modern characters by Shakespear" (published later the same year); and, a transcription of "The butterfy's ball and The grasshopper's feast".

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of 71 poems by various 18th-century authors, primarily on meditative or melancholy subjects. Such poems include On the death of a beloved father; Monody on the death of a lady who died in childbed; Elegy written on the plain of Fontenoy; Elegy on Mary Blandy; and On the death of Deborah Carleton. The collection, moreover, contains a number of poems about non-European cultures, including Peru by Helen Maria Williams; The wrongs of Africa by William Roscoe; Oriental Eclogues by William Collins; and Stanzas to fancy written in the West Indies. Other poets represented in the collection include Ambrose Philips, William Cowper, and William Whitehead. The volume also contains a number of humorous verses by John Byron.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of over a hundred primarily sentimental or melancholy poems. Many of the poems are by Charlotte Smith, such as The female exile; The forest boy; and Apostrophe to an old tree. Other meditatve entries include The pains of memory and The cell of contemplation. The collection also contains a number of poems on nature and landscapes, including The bird's egg by Dr. Thompson; Sonnet, written on rising ground near Lichfield by Anna Seward; and Sonnet to the north wind by Sarah Herd. Other poets represented in the collection include William Cowper, William Smyth, Richard Polwhele, and William Roscoe. Interspersed with these poems are seven prose pieces. They consist of Thomas Beddoes' Extract of a letter on early instruction parituclarly that of the poor; A brief account of the death of the late Lord Lyttleton; Benjamin Franklin's letter to Benjamin Webb; Extract of a letter from John Fry jun to -- relative to an extraordinary character at Redstone in North America, concerning a clairvoyant boy; William Roscoe's On the comparative excellence of the sciences and arts; Character of the late John Marriott from the Gentleman's Magazine; and Anna Seward's Extract of a letter to Boswell on the subject of Dr Johnson.

Roscoe, Jane Griffies. [Commonplace books].

Four volumes of poetical commonplace books kept by William Roscoe's wife Jane Griffies Roscoe before and after their 1781 marriage. The volumes each contain contributions from Roscoe in his own hand, as well as poems written by him but copied by his wife. They also appear to contain original work written by Jane Griffies Roscoe, in addition to works by poets such as William Collins, Thomas Gray, Phillis Wheatley, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, Lord Lyttleton and Samuel Johnson. Each volume contains an inscription on the first page by Frederick Warburton Dunston, dated 3 November 1893, noting that he purchased the "volumes at Sotheby's on or about 19 July 1887" and that the transcriber was Jane Griffies, afterwards wife of Wm. Roscoe of Liverpool." Dunston owned 5 volumes of this commonplace, but there are now only 4 volumes and it is unclear when the fifth may have been lost. He believed that all 5 volumes were at "one time in the possession of the late Joseph Mayer of Liverpool," who probably purchased them "from the widow of my great uncle Richard Roscoe MD," who had been a great collector of Roscoe family documents.

Manuscript, in various hands, of a collection of several hundred primarily sentimental and lighthearted poems, both copied by hand as well as printed and pasted in. The collection includes poetry by Robert Southey, Thomas Gray, William Wordsworth, Ann Radcliffe, Mary Robinson, William Roscoe, and Thomas Moore; and address such subjects as death of children; orphans; love; nature; and women's conduct. Most of the manuscript poems include the names of the people who copied them; an excerpt from George Byron's Don Juan is labeled, "Copied for me by George H. Lawrence," while a poem by Southey is annotated, "C W Lawrence." Many others have been signed by members of the D'Aguilan family. The collection also includes a number of printed anecdotes, letters, and news articles on such subjects as the trial of John Bellingham for the assassination of Prime Minister Spencer Perceval; a report of a fancy-dress ball given by the Hand-in-Hand Society in 1819; an advertisement for the sale of a horse skeleton at Bullock's Museum; and the will of Samuel Romilly. On p. 18, a news article dated 1808 about a masquerade mentions Mrs. Lawrence as a guest. The volume also contains a letter in a child's hand written to "dear Sophy," followed by numerous sketches of people.

The William Roscoe collection, dating 1774-1887 and undated, consists primarily of correspondence between Roscoe, his family circle and various friends, booksellers and professional colleagues. The collection also contains 4 volumes of commonplace books compiled by his wife, Jane Griffies Roscoe, contemporary and modern images of Roscoe and his residences, and related ephemera. The majority of the correspondence collected here consists of outgoing letters written by Roscoe to his sons and to colleagues and friends in the worlds of publishing, art and politics, as do incoming letters sent to Roscoe and to others. Some letters are brief notes regarding social engagements, while others contain more substantive discussions of topics ranging from slavery to bookselling and art collecting. Frequent correspondents include sons Robert, Richard, Thomas and Henry as well as booksellers Cadell & Davies and artist Martin Archer Shee. The four volumes of commonplace books, dating 1774-1790, compiled by Jane Griffies Roscoe contain autograph contributions by Roscoe, as well as works by him written in Jane's hand. Ephemera and images, dating 1805-1853 and undated, include portrait engravings of Roscoe and of his residence at Allerton Hall, as well as related newspapers and other clippings.
