Posters, currency, an armband, photographs, and other souvenirs gathered during Bradley's World War I service as an officer with the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe and following the war as a member of the American section of the Permanent International Armistice Commission (Nov. 1918-Aug. 1919). Collection includes draft notice, 1915; posters; currency; vouchers; comic map of the St. Mihiel salient entitled "Laughic Scummary of Ignorance" issued by the A.E.F. Second Army in commemoration of the signing of the Armistice (11 Nov. 1918); [a "salient" is a bulge in a line between two opposing armed forces, requiring the defense of three sides; during Sept. 1918, the town of St. Mihiel, France, south of Verdun, gave its name to a battle during the Meuse-Argonne operation in which Gen. John J. Pershing lead American troops in the first major offensive of the Great War involving an American division]. Other items include handwritten menu, 12 May 1919, from a dinner hosted by the PIAC in honor of Gen. Pershing; and photograph taken outside a villa in Spa, Belgium, showing Bradley and other members of the American section of the PIAC, including Gen. Pershing. Also including Columbia, S.C., High School report card, 1897-1898, issued to Bradley's wife, Jane Vander Horst Heyward Trenholm; European travel journal (May-Sept. 1907) of Jane Trenholm, including account of a visit in Milan with the former Jane T. Perry of Charleston, S.C., who had married the Duke of Litta in 1893; passenger list for the ship Menominee on which she sailed from Philadelphia to Antwerp; pencil sketches, postcards, and photographs re the tour, and accounts of her return voyage, a trip marred by a storm, engine trouble, and excessive demands on the crew by some of her fellow passengers. Other items include stock certificates from the Columbia Stage Co. (1924), Spring Lake, Inc. (1935), and Columbia Films, Inc. (1958); certificate (1925) documenting Bradley's appointment to Army infantry major; and 14 volumes (1949-1953) of correspondence re Southern accents and South Carolina dialects, chiefly in response to a newspaper column edited by Bradley.

Consisting of administrative files, including bylaws, records of board and general meetings, and membership records; correspondence, reference, and other material on local, state and national program items; also including small amount of material relating to Lexington County, S.C. Records divided into three main series: Administrative, Program, and Clippings files. Administrative Files, 1947-1995, include general papers; organizational bylaws; records of board and other meetings and conventions; financial records, including records of annual fund-raising drives and treasurer's reports; membership records; program development; public relations; and a variety of publications. Program Files, 1942-1995, contain correspondence, reference, and other material on diverse local, state, and national program items, which include: city-county consolidation (1959-1980) and local development studies (1966-1983), chiefly relating to the Congaree Vista (1977-1989), the "River City" project, Riverbanks Zoo, and "Old Columbia High School, Survey, 1983." At the height of the Cold War during the 1950s and 1960s, matters of loyalty and security were a major concern, and the League was involved in the Freedom Agenda Committee (a program of the Carrie Chapman Catt Memorial Fund, Inc., a research and educational fund created by the League of Women Voters of the United States); files include discussions about the proposed Bricker Amendment of 1953, communist infiltration of government (1955-1956), and other issues related to national security and individual liberty. Other Program files include: District of Columbia, 1964-1981; efforts to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (Sandra Watts, a League member, also served with ERA South Carolina); natural resources (includes air and water quality, fluoridation (1965-1967), energy, land use, and hazardous waste concerns); education; health care and Richland Memorial Hospital (1961-1980); housing (1962-1980); and state government files (re constitutional revision and reapportionment as well as legislative issues). Illustrated postcards feature scenes in S.C. and elsewhere: Columbia sites pictured include the water treatment plant, Columbia High School, the Palmetto Building, and "Saluda Dam showing Lake Murray" illustrated with a conjectural "artist's conception of the largest earthen Dam in the world... to be completed... in the fall of 1930"; and a humorous cartoon card illustrated with a woman playing golf. Other S.C. postcards feature exterior view of the Flagg Hotel at Murrells Inlet (Georgetown County, S.C.); and a view of gardens and pond at Middleton Place (Charleston, S.C.) Includes registers for summer or "Vacation school" and the regular academic year. Schools represented include: Columbia High School (104 volumes: 1893-1919, for Grades 8 through 10); Washington Street School (nine volumes: 1893-1894, 1903-1908, 1912-1915, for Grades 6 through 9); and Central Night School (two volumes: 1913-1914 and 1915-1916, for Grades 7 and 8). Singe volumes only held for McMaster School (one volume: 1912-1913, Grade 7 - Henry A. Wise, teacher); and Waverley School (one volume: 1913-1914, Grade 7 - W. Lykes, Jr., teacher) The Columbia City Directory for 1913 identifies the following addresses for these institutions: Columbia High School (1417 Marion St. at Washington St.); McMaster School (1106 Pickens St.); Washington Street School (1323 Washington St.); and Waverley Graded School (located at 1225 Oak St., which appears as a separate entry distinct from the "Waverley Colored School," located at 2329 Gervais St.) [several decades later, the spelling of this neighborhood's name had been shortened "Waverly"].

Two scrapbooks,1931-1939 (Vols. Also includes a letter, 1969, from U.S. Senator, Strom Thurmond, to Sarah's daughter. Scrapbook Vol. I (1924 - 1935) preserves collection of Art Deco greeting cards celebrating Valentines Day, birthdays, Christmas, and a newspaper announcement of Graydon's sixth birthday; and scrapbook XI (1941), re a visit to Columbia from a college friend, Betty Mae Exall of Dallas, Texas.

Correspondence includes approximately 500 letters, documenting his long friendship with Yates Snowden (1858-1933); and 7 manuscripts, 27 Dec. 1918 - 16 Dec. 1922, representing Bennett's research with Ambrose Elliott Gonzales on the creole form of the English language known as Gullah, and related to Gonzales' publication of The Black Border: Gullah Stories of the Carolina Coast, published 1922. Letters, 5 and 8 Jan. 1921, containing Bennett's assessments of the works of Charleston artist William Aiken Walker; 16 July 1923, his estimate of writers Hervey Allen and DuBose Heyward; and correspondence, mansucripts of poems, critical notes, and other papers relating to Snowden's writings, including his poem, "A Blast Against Bookkeepers."
