Consists of letters received and signed copies (transcripts, handwritten) of letters sent by James Manning, receipts, accounts, inventories, a journal, a history of Rhode Island College written (ms.) by Manning, and catalogs of books. The collection documents the early history of Brown University (Rhode Island College), particularly Manning's presidency, his efforts to raise funds (subscriptions) from Baptists for support of the college and to obtain books for the college library; and the discussion of religion by Baptist clergy in America and Great Britain. Subjects related to Brown University history include the decision to locate the college in Providence, the need for library books and sources for books, the occupation of the college edifice by American and French troops during the Revolution, and employment of faculty. Subjects related to the the Baptist church include the Philadelphia Baptist Association, the First Baptist Church in Providence, local revivals, the condition of and attitudes toward religion in America and Great Britain, including controversies between Baptists, Presbyterians, and other denominations, responses to texts published by clergy, and actions in Great Britain that were unfavorable to the church. Manning traveled in New England, Pa., N.J., and N.Y., and often preached along the route. In 1779 he visited West Point, N.Y., and met several notable figures of the Revolutionary War, including George Washington. The work and family life of John Gano, Stephen Gano, and Solomon Drowne are discussed in the correpondence. Correspondents include Abraham Booth, Robert Carter, Caleb Evans, William Gordon, John Rippon, John Ryland, Hezekiah Smith, Samuel Stennett, and Benjamin Wallin.

The collection includes business and personal correspondence, financial and legal papers, and other items of the Reynolds family and relations, chiefly concerning H.L. Reynolds's companies: Reynolds, Witherspoon, & Co., a Mobile merchandizing firm, and its successor, H.L. Reynolds & Co., cotton factors and merchants in Mobile and New York. There are also many letters relating to family matters, especially since Reynolds was often in partnership with family members. During the Civil War, there are documents relating to Reynolds's arrest and detention by federal agents. Letters, 1866-1868, chiefly concern getting bales of cotton from Alabama and Mississippi planters to market in spite of federal agents' authorization to seize cotton as reparation payments. Also included are four diaries, written by unidentified female family members in Pennsylvania and Connecticut, recording daily life and family events, 1802-1840, with considerable gaps; papers relating to land warrants of the Mobile firm of Harding and Redditt, 1858-1884; documents about Greene family history; an incomplete biographical sketch of Hezekiah Smith (1737-1805), Baptist evangelist of Haverhill, Mass.; and a sketch book of Reynolds's son, Harry, containing North Carolina scenes.

Title: Miscellaneous papers concerning Rhode Island College, 1763-1804.

Consists of minutes, reports, correspondence, a charter, lists of subscribers, lists of members of the corporation, accounts, and library catalogs, dating from 1763 to 1804. The collection documents the grant from the General Assembly and the Governor of the Colony of R.I. for the establishment of a college, first located in Warren, R.I., in 1764, and then moved to Providence in 1770; the early history of the College's Corporation; the appropriation of financial support; students; the college library; and the impact of the Revolution on the College. The College was governed by a Corporation of two boards, Fellows and Trustees, each comprised of specific numbers of members from various Protestant denominations. However, there were no religious requirments for students and in 1770 the Corporation expressly stated that Jewish students would be admitted to the College. Stephen Hopkins was Chancellor of the College from 1764 to 1785; Jabez Bowen was Chancellor from 1785 to 1815. James Manning was President of the College from 1765 to 1791; Jonathan Maxcy served as the second President from 1792 to 1802. Collecting financial support for the College was of major concern for the Corporation and money was usually raised through subscriptions. Baptist clergy, including Morgan Edwards, who traveled to Great Britain, and Hezekiah Smith in Ga. and S.C., solicted subscriptions on behalf of the college. The competition between R.I. towns, especially Newport and Providence, for the final location of the college is documented in the collection. Members of the Brown family (Nicholas, Joseph, John, and Moses) were instrumental in the the 1770 decision to locate the College in Providence and were responsible for building the college edifice. Nicholas Brown (1769-1841) gave a $5000 endowment in 1804 and the College was subsequently named Brown University. The development of the college library is documented through orders for books, letters related to the donation of books,and library catalogs. Student conduct, admissions, commencements, tuition, and fees for commons and boarding are documented through the Corporation minutes and correspondence. During the Revolution the College was closed. The college edifice was used as a barracks for American troops from 1776 to 1780 and was a hospital for French militia from 1786 to 1792. After the war, the College sought compensation from Congress for the damages done during the occupation. A speech given by George Washington at the College on Aug. 19, 1790, is in the collection.

Title: Diary, 1773-1778.

Diary kept by Rev. Hezekiah Smith, pastor of the Baptist Church in Haverhill, Mass., from 1 Aug. 1773 - 27 Apr. 1778. Entries note sermons delivered, visits, baptisms performed, and funerals attended. Smith notes his service as a regimental and brigade chaplain from 1775-78, in particular with John Nixon's (Mass.) Regiment (later the 4th Continental) at Cambridge during the Siege of Boston, including sermons delivered and the activities of the Continental Army.
