Includes material on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, New York City; information on the Progressive movement (1909-1914) and the beginnings of the New Republic and its early staff; and transcripts of oral-history interviews conducted by Gerald Gunther of Stanford Law School and others, of Judge Hand, his family and associates.

Organized by date of arrival in Lynn, Massachusetts, the record book provides information about vessel name, Ship Master's name, port of departure, and type of cargo shipped. Towards the back of the book an alphabetical listing of all ship names is provided. More than 600 ships are represented in the records kept by George H. Chase, Deputy Customs Collector. The final pages in the book provide a "Return of the Product of the Fisheries" per quarter for Nahant, Swampscott, and Lynn Massachusetts.
